[CanYoAssDigIt] DeLay Steps Down After Indictment

Did Jay Leno have some good jokes about this?

I also hear that a federal judge has ordered the release of
documentation of torture by US military. I'll bet Leno had some knee
slappers about that one.

But "torture and stealing elections is just fine by me and the
founding fathers" Roberts was sworn in.

I have the forlorn fantasy that they will decide that the current
administration is so illegal that they will remove all the judges they
put in place and reverse all the policies and laws established, but I
guess that's pretty unlikely.

What is it about these foreigners, anyway? English, Canadian,
Australian, Danish, what have you, they all think that Bush is insane.

At dinner last night one of the people at our table said "when I look
at the United States I feel like I'm watching Rome burn."

Hey guys, I want to let you know I was a good American and I stood up
for our leadership. I said "No, we are not in the Nero era of the
American Empire yet. We are in the Caligula era!"

Hooray for me and the USA!

* DeLay Hammered by Campaign Finance Indictment, Steps Down as GOP Majority
Leader *

A Texas grand jury on Wednesday indicted House Majority leader Tom DeLay (R
- Texas) and two political associates, charging them with a conspiracy to
violate Texas campaign finance laws. House Republicans gathered within hours
of the indictment becoming public and chose Rep. Roy Blunt (R - MO) to
replace DeLay as majority leader who was forced to step down because of
House rules. We speak with the executive editor of The Texas Observer and
independent journalist Doug Ireland.

[CanYoAssDigIt] Fwd: Disappearing Antiwar Protests

From FAIR (see below)

It appears that one of the FOX/NPR reporters, Juan Williams, may be
part of the reality-based community, at least part of the time - the
other FOX?NPR reporter Mara Liasson, is doing a better job in
fulfilling her responsibilities as a member of the propaganda arm of
the executive branch of government.

I am curious if there was any good coverage on NPR (which wasn't
mentioned in the FAIR report) or did they treat the protests (if
mentioned at all) in the manner that they treat people who are
concerned about electoral theft, thinking about moving to Canada
because of creeping totalitarianism, or support Cindy Sheehan - that
is, with scorn and ridicule?

I'm killing a little time in an Internet Cafe in Melbourne, Australia.
Got a chance to read a little news. The papers aren't so very
different than in the states (and what would you expect from a place
where Rupert Murdock got his start) but the
readers are sure better. The letters to the editor are so well
informed. Dictatorship (under the guise of anti-terrorism) is
overcoming Australia as it is in the states and England, but in
Australia they realize it, and they aren't afraid to speak out about
it. Admirable.

Disappearing Antiwar Protests
Media shrug off mass movement against war

9/27/05

Hundreds of thousands of Americans around the country protested the
Iraq War on the weekend of September 24-25, with the largest
demonstration bringing between 100,000 and 300,000 to Washington, D.C.
on Saturday.

But if you relied on television for your news, you'd hardly know the
protests happened at all. According to the Nexis news database, the
only mention on the network newscasts that Saturday came on the NBC
Nightly News, where the massive march received all of 87 words. (ABC
World News Tonight transcripts were not available for September 24,
possibly due to pre-emption by college football.)

Cable coverage wasn't much better. CNN, for example, made only passing
references to the weekend protests. CNN anchor Aaron Brown offered an
interesting explanation (9/24/05):

"There was a huge 100,000 people in Washington protesting the war in
Iraq today, and I sometimes today feel like I've heard from all
100,000 upset that they did not get any coverage, and it's true they
didn't get any coverage. Many of them see conspiracy. I assure you
there is none, but it's just the national story today and the national
conversation today is the hurricane that put millions and millions of
people at risk, and it's just kind of an accident of bad timing, and I
know that won't satisfy anyone but that's the truth of it."
To hear Brown tell it, a 24-hour cable news channel is somehow unable
to cover more than one story at a time-- and the "national
conversation" is something that CNN just listens in on, rather than
helping to determine through its coverage choices.

The following day (9/25/05), the network's Sunday morning shows had an
opportunity to at least reflect on the significance of the anti-war
movement. With a panel consisting of three New York Times columnists,
Tim Russert mentioned the march briefly in one question to Maureen
Dowd-- which ended up being about how the antiwar movement might
affect Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential chances.

On ABC's This Week, host George Stephanopoulos observed, "We've seen
polls across the board suggesting that we're bogged down now in Iraq
and now you have this growing protest movement. Do you believe that
we're reaching a tipping point in public opinion?" That question was
put to pro-war Republican Sen. John McCain, who responded by
inaccurately claiming: "Most polls I see, that most Americans believe
still that we have to stay the course.... I certainly understand the
dissatisfaction of the American people but I think most of them still
want to stay the course and we have to."

A recent CBS/New York Times poll (9/9-13/05) found 52 percent support
for leaving Iraq "as soon as possible." A similar Gallup poll
(9/16-18) found that 33 percent of the public want some troops
withdrawn, with another 30 percent wanting all the troops withdrawn.
Only 34 percent wanted to maintain or increase troop levels--positions
that could be described as wanting to "stay the course."
Stephanopoulos, however, failed to challenge McCain's false claim.

(An L.A. Times recap of the protests--9/25/05-- included a misleading
reference to the Gallup poll, reporting that while the war is seen as
a "mistake" by 59 percent of respondents, "There remains, however,
widespread disagreement about the best solution. The same poll showed
that 30 percent of Americans favored a total troop withdrawal, though
26 percent favored maintaining the current level." By leaving out the
33 percent of those polled who wanted to decrease troop numbers, the
paper gave a misleading impression of closely divided opinion.)

On Fox News Sunday (9/25/05), panelist Juan Williams was rebuked by
his colleagues when he noted that public opinion had turned in favor
of pulling out of Iraq. Fellow Fox panelist and NPR reporter Mara
Liasson responded, "Oh, I don't think that's true," a sentiment echoed
by Fox panelist Brit Hume. When Williams brought up the Saudi foreign
minister's statement that foreign troops were not helping to stabilize
Iraq, panelist William Kristol retorted: "So now the American left is
with the House of Saud." (That was, if anything, a more complimentary
take on the protesters than was found in Fox's news reporting, when
White House correspondent Jim Angle-- 9/26/05-- referred to them as
"disparate groups united by their hatred of President Bush, in
particular, and U.S. policies in general.")

Another feature of the protest coverage was a tendency to treat a tiny
group of pro-war hecklers as somehow equivalent to the massive
anti-war gathering. NBC's Today show (9/25/05) had a report that gave
a sentence to each: "Opponents and supporters of the war marched in
cities across the nation on Saturday. In the nation's capital an
estimated 100,000 war protestors marched near the White House. A few
hundreds supporters of the war lined the route in a
counterdemonstration."

Reports on NBC Nightly News and CBS Sunday Morning were similarly
"balanced," and a September 26 USA Today report gave nearly equal
space to the counter-demonstrators and their concerns, though the
paper reported that their pro-war rally attracted just 400
participants (that is, less than half of 1 percent of the number of
antiwar marchers).

In a headline that summed up the absurdity of this type of coverage,
the Washington Post reported (9/25/05): "Smaller but Spirited Crowd
Protests Antiwar March; More Than 200 Say They Represent Majority."
Perhaps this "crowd" felt that way because they've grown accustomed to
a media system that so frequently echoes their views, while keeping
antiwar voices--representing the actual majority opinion--off the
radar.

[CanYoAssDigIt] Re: [MUSICIANS seeking Band Members] Erotic dating Video Chat!

Hey Trisia

I saw your notice posted on the musiciansseekingbandmembers list.
You've come to the wrong place. Guys join bands so that they don't
have to pay for these services.

It really really works! Even ugly little trolls like Bob Dylan and
Keith Richards get to date and marry models.

I have an active sex life myself - just today, I did Kate Moss before
breakfast and Wynonna Ryder after lunch.

I'm looking for a drummer for a West Coast Tour I'm going to undertake
with a well known artist, the chicks will be on us like stink on shit.
So thanks but no thanks Trisia, and all you drummers out there in
cyberspace, give me a big shout out, the good times will be rollin'
and we'll be feelin no pain in our colon.

Man, thank you for spearheading this effort. I hardly slept last night
worrying about Kate.

Where do I send my check?

Also, let's not forget Lil Kim, she's suffered so much already. And
facing a year in jail (90 days if she's nice). I just want to empty
out my bank account for her.

[CanYoAssDigIt] Ya gotta love those guys!

A quote from Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. No wonder Bush and
Robertson want to assassinate him, he's helping poor people:

"Practically no one in the United States knows that we've donated
millions of dollars to the governorship of Louisiana, to the New
Orleans Red Cross. We're now giving care to more than 5,000 victims,
and now we're going to supply gasoline, freely in some cases, and with
discounts in other cases, to the poorest of communities, starting with
New Orleans and its surroundings ... We've been helping. And we've
been even rescuing people."

This is the proper way to help poor people:

"The Mirror newspaper of Britain is reporting that the U.S. government
plans to incinerate 400,000 rations of food shipped from Britain to
feed starving Hurricane Katrina survivors. According to the paper, the
Food and Drug Agency has determined that the NATO ration packs are
unfit for human consumption even though they are eaten by British
troops in Iraq. Thousands of gallons of pear juice donated by Israeli
relief agencies have already been destroyed. Food from Spain and Italy
has also been judged unfit for human consumption."

[CanYoAssDigIt] Re: Your Ad In The Stranger

Yeah man, my anticipation is growing I forget to eat two, three days
at a stretch, sleep only fitfully... my hair is falling out in clumps
and I'm getting a rash all over my body. I am sure this is going to be
the best song poem ever, topping even "Non-Violent Tae Kwon do

This is going to be GREAT, I can feel it from my toenails to the top
of my hairless, smooth and damp head.

I don't know about you guys, but when I see the title, original music
by christopher guest, eugene levy, michael mckean, harry shearer, etc.
I know the movie is going to be awesome. I don't know why but I just
adore all those quirky songs of their's. I own all the soundtracks
except for Guffman which I still can't seem to find anywhere in the
world, but if anyone knows where I can find it, it would be
appreciated!

Very excited about this movie, can't wait to see Ricky in this!

Check ebay. Someone is selling what seems to be a fine quality
bootlegs. It's worth getting, if only to hear the last line in "Bubby

IMDB has posted a release date of January 20th, 2006!! That is awesome
news, except i thought Chris Guest usually took many many months to
edit the hours of footage he usually gets from all the improv actors.
Doesnt Jan. 20th seem awfully soon? I mean I hope it is because I cant
wait to see it... but i dunno.

any thoughts?

Yeah, the imdb seems to have this one wrong. The tentative release
date is now October 2006:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0470765/board/nest/24257915

Which is still significantly faster than normal. It took them about 18
months to edit A Mighty Wind because of all the footage, whereas
they'll only have 10 or 11 on this one. Maybe they plan on having less
than their typical 80-hours worth of footage to sift through, being
that it's not documentary style??

Oh wow, exciting day!! A new interview with Eugene Levy (from zap2it)
was just posted and he's got lots of new details about FYC.

Including:
-Chris Guest will be playing director in more ways than one, taking on
the role of Jay Berman, an independent film director
-Eugene will play Morley Orfkin, the head of a talent agency
-despite not being listed on the imdb yet, Jennifer Coolidge's name is
listed among the cast members
-also, Ricky Gervais apparently has just a "little part"... so I guess
we were wrong about him being the main actor in question... my vote
switches to Mike McKean :)

Anyways, it's a great article and there's lots more including a more
in-depth plot summary. The full interview is here:
http://www.zap2it.com/movies/news/story/0,1259,---26542,00.html

Also, in another interview, Eugene names Christopher Moynihan (who
played the newest Mainstreet Singer in AMW) and Rachel Harris as two
people who will have bigger roles in the new movie.

Kudo craziness
Guest and company to send up season

Christopher Guest has decided to make a movie about the shooting of a
bad movie. In the process, the man who gave us "Best In Show" intends
to do a sendup of awards season.
Warner Independent Pictures is targeting "For Your Consideration,"
which Castle Rock Entertainment will produce, for a fall 2006 release.

Ricky Gervais will join a roster of thesps who've appeared in Guest's
previous pics, including Catherine O'Hara, Parker Posey, Harry
Shearer, Eugene Levy, Bob Balaban, Jennifer Coolidge, Michael McKean
and Fred Willard.

The film won't be a mockumentary in the style of Guest's "Waiting for
Guffman," "Best in Show" or "A Mighty Wind" but instead centers on a
movie-within-a-movie that will be largely improvised. Guest is
directing and co-writing with Levy.

Pic revolves around three actors shooting a small indie film whose
lives are turned upside down when buzz starts that their performances
are awards-worthy.

Guest said the movie won't be about the Academy Awards, although Oscar
is mentioned once. "Consideration" will end just before award
nominations are announced.

"We all know many people who have been through this reality, and how
it changes them. This happens to be an area I know something about.
It's a virus," Guest told Daily Variety.

The filmmaker said he and Levy had great fun writing the script for
the movie-within-a-movie, titled "Home for Purim," which takes place
in the South in the mid-1940s.

"Home for Purim" is an "extraordinarily poorly written movie. It's a
melodrama, and it's just awful. These actors never would have imagined
that this movie was going to change their lives," Guest said.

Gervais will play the head of a studio's specialty division producing
"Purim," while Guest will play a director who has shot 18 sitcom
pilots, none of which have gone to series. Levy will play an agent.
The three actors will be played by O'Hara, Posey and Shearer.

The saga begins when one of the actresses is told of an Internet rumor
that she's sure to be nominated for an award. A morning talkshow
co-anchor talks about awards chances with her male lead. And the pic's
third thesp is engulfed in similar rumors. "They are just buffeted
around by the weirdness of what happens," Guest said.

The indie film biz is sure to recognize itself in "Consideration,"
particularly the specialty film divisions at major studios.

In Guest's movie, "Home for Purim" is being produced by Sunshine
Classics, an arm of U.K.-based studio Hemisphere.

In real life, Guest's movie will be distributed by such a specialty
arm -- Warner Independent. In the past, Warner Bros. had distributed
Guest's films, but that was before Warner Independent was created.
Guest said Warner Independent was a natural fit.

Karen Murphy is producing, while Shangri-La Entertainment is financing
the pic, which will film in early October in Los Angeles.

Warner Independent president Mark Gill and exec Michael Andreen will
supervise, while Martin Shafer and Liz Glotzer will oversee for Castle
Rock Entertainment.

Ooh, thanks for the update, Keymaster. I can't believe this movie is
coming out so soon (relatively!). I had myself prepared for mid-2007.

Also, this isn't earth-shattering, but Eugene revealed a bit more
about his character in a recent interview:
"I play an agent who used to be partners in a very large talent
agency," Levy says. "My partner died and everybody left. Evidently he
was the brains of the outfit, so now my setup couldn't be smaller. I
have absolutely no clout in the business but still consider myself a
player."

Sounding good. I still hope he gets to play an *beep* haha.

I checked this out, and one source says:

West: George Bush doesn't care about black people!

It appears to be a transcript from the actual broadcast. Actively
hating a group and not caring about them are different things, the the
result can be (and was) the same.

I just read that 72% of African-Americans agree with Kayne West:

"A new USA Today Poll has found that 72 percent of African-Americans
feel that President Bush does not care about the country's Black
population. 67 percent of white respondents said he did."

Now that's interesting. Who do you think is right - the Black folks,
or the White folks? eh? eh? eh? eh? eh? eh? eh? eh? eh? eh? eh? eh?
eh? eh? eh? eh? eh? eh? eh? eh? eh? eh? eh? eh? eh? eh? eh? eh? eh?
eh? eh? eh? eh? eh? eh? eh? eh? eh? eh? eh? eh? eh? eh?

West also said: I hate the way they portray us in the media. You see a
black family, it says, "They're looting." You see a white family, it
says, "They're looking for food." And, you know, it's been five days
[waiting for federal help] because most of the people are black. And
even for me to complain about it, I would be a hypocrite because I've
tried to turn away from the TV because it's too hard to watch. I've
even been shopping before even giving a donation, so now I'm calling
my business manager right now to see what is the biggest amount I can
give, and just to imagine if I was down there, and those are my people
down there. So anybody out there that wants to do anything that we can
help -- with the way America is set up to help the poor, the black
people, the less well-off, as slow as possible. I mean, the Red Cross
is doing everything they can. We already realize a lot of people that
could help are at war right now, fighting another way -- and they've
given them permission to go down and shoot us!

Does anybody know if West actually gave the biggest amount he could
give? They've been putting Caligula's father up as a fundraiser for
disaster relief. The Bush's and their extended family of monied
aristocrats have billions and billions and more billions of dollars.
Does anybody know how much of their own money they have given?

Have they shown they do care about black people in any way that
matters - ways that can affect real world change?

And by the way, has anybody here seen the movie they made about the
Bushes - "The Aristocrats"?

could be problematic, I'm hypoglycemic, and I get a little dizzy at

[CanYoAssDigIt] The Onion Does It Again...

Halliburton Gets Contract To Pry Gold Fillings From New Orleans Corpses' Teeth
September 14, 2005 | Issue 41•37

HOUSTON—On Tuesday, Halliburton received a $110 million no-bid
government contract to pry the gold fillings from the mouths of
deceased disaster victims in the New Orleans-Gulf Coast area. "We are
proud to serve the government in this time of crisis by recovering
valuable resources from the wreckage of this deadly storm," said David
J. Lesar, Halliburton's president. "The gold we recover from the human
rubble of Katrina can be used to make fighter-jet electronics,
supercomputer chips, inflation-proof A-grade investments, and luxury
yachting watches."

[CanYoAssDigIt] Kate Pierson Thought She Was Still In The Closet...

http://www.giampetruzzi.com/images/images/Stories/Kate%20Pierson/Pierson%202005/Kate%20Pierson%202005.htm

So, I was just as surprised as everyone else when Pierson revealed to
me in an exclusive interview last summer that, like her band mates
Keith Strickland and Fred Schneider, she's gay — or "wild and
bisexual" as she put it.

This interview reminded me of a story in the Onion. The only real
surprise was that Cindy Wilson is straight and married.

Area Homosexual Thinks He's Still In The Closet
September 1, 1999 | Issue 35•31

TOLEDO, OH—Despite the fact that everyone he meets obviously assumes
he is gay, 34-year-old Toledo-area homosexual Jeremy Schuitt still
thinks he's in the closet, local sources reported Tuesday.

A graphic designer who secretly frequents Cruisers, a local dance
club, Schuitt has told only four people about his homosexuality.
However, nearly all of his friends, co-workers and relatives are well
aware of it, as is the clerk at the neighborhood Starbucks where
Schuitt orders a "double mocha 'capp' in [a] paper [cup]" every day
before work.

"Jeremy is a very nice guy, and I totally support his sexual
orientation," said co-worker Diane Pulaski, one of the countless
people to whom Schuitt has not come out. "I think it's great that he's
so open about it."

Though Schuitt denies dating men and feigns ignorance of gay culture,
his extensive collection of handpainted Italian tiles and love of
Stephen Sondheim are well-known.

Among the many other indicators that have tipped off the world to
Schuitt's homosexuality include his running commentary on footwear,
his constant playing of the Pet Shop Boys' Very on the mini CD boom
box at his workstation, his standard greeting of "And how are we doing
today?" and the week-long depression he fell into following Princess
Diana's death.

"Sadly, we still live in a largely homophobic society, so there are
many reasons why an individual would choose to hide his gayness," said
magazine editor James Allenby, for whom Schuitt frequently does
freelance graphic-design work. "That's why I applaud Jeremy's decision
to just let it all hang out. He's so incredibly fun and flamboyant."

As people get to know Schuitt better, however, they inevitably
discover that his openness is purely accidental.

"What can I say? I just adore Paris," Schuitt told co-worker Geri Hahn
recently. "The Seine, The Louvre, Jean-Paul Gaultier—I'd die to live
there someday."

"That is," Schuitt added, "assuming my girlfriend Jackie would want to
move there, too."

Schuitt's invention of "Jacqueline"—his French-Canadian fiancée
currently touring Canada with the Montreal Ballet—is just one of the
many cover stories Schuitt has created to hide his homosexuality from
those in whom he cannot confide.

Unbeknownst to Schuitt, every one of his efforts has been
unsuccessful. Even those friends who have not accidentally found
Manhole Magazine's 1998 Boy-Toy Revue video Schuitt keeps hidden
behind his entertainment center have noted the other tell-tale signs
of homosexuality around his apartment, such his extensive collection
of pierrot figurines and coordinated futon cover and curtain set.

Progressive and open-minded, Schuitt's friends have fully accepted his
closeted status and have tried to create a comfortable environment for
his sexual denial. But despite their open-mindedness, many of these
friends were shocked and uncomfortable upon discovering that Schuitt
was not yet "out."

"Of course, I've always respected his right to privacy regarding that
very personal decision," friend Erin Chance said. "But there's no
doubt about it--he's gay. Not just a little gay, really gay."

Chance is among the many people who, upon meeting Schuitt, told him
that they "have lots of gay friends," only to have the closeted man
nervously reply that he thinks his sister might have a gay friend.

"I felt a little embarrassed for just assuming, but how was I supposed
to know?" Chance said. "My gaydar tells me he's way out of the
closet."

Janice Sharperson is among the four friends whom Schuitt, in moments
of abandon, has told, "I'm not sure, but sometimes I think I might be
bisexual."

"Big shocker, huh?" Sharperson said. "I know it makes sense that he'd
be used to hiding it after growing up Catholic in a small town, but
we're all secretly rooting for him to come out. It's getting kind of
weird acting like we don't know that everyone knows he likes men."

Even Schuitt's distant relatives are aware of his homosexuality.

"Last fall, at his cousin Bryan's wedding, Jeremy stood up to make an
announcement," said Bea Langan, Schuitt's great aunt. "I thought for
sure he was going to tell us all his little 'secret,' but instead he
told us that his girlfriend unfortunately couldn't make it because she
had pneumonia. Oh, well. Maybe next time."

Schuitt, who first realized he was attracted to males in high school,
has been perceived as gay since fifth or sixth grade.

"Jeremy is one of those students I'll never forget," said Marcia
Krause, Schuitt's middle-school drama teacher. "He was so sweet and so
talented--you should have seen him in Pippin. I wonder where he is
now. San Francisco or the West Village, I suppose."

[CanYoAssDigIt] Awful - listening to the Roberts coverage right now on NPR

Why is it the job of NPR reporters to be apologists for Roberts?

Oh yes, I forgot. They now interpret their mission to be the
propaganda arm of the executive branch of the government. They are a
bunch of overpaid hacks who are almost entirely out of the business of
journalism, and are now working in the field of public relations
(often viewed as a related field, but it is in fact the polar
opposite).

Neil Conan the barbarian is the absolute worst. It's no wonder the
mainstream organizations have lavished awards on him. This is typical.
Alexander Cockburn broke important stories such as the overturned
incurbator hoax that Bush Sr used to justify the first gulf war.
Virtually everybody else was taken in by it, including Amnesty
International and Human Rights Watch. Eventually they admitted their
error, but he broke the story that it was a hoax when it was early
enough for it to make a difference. Nobody in the MSM followed up on
his investigation, and he certainly never won any awards for that or
any of the other important work he's done.

Check out these people that are cheering on Neil Conan, at
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/1473935/posts -

These people seem to think that Conan also works for Fox. I don't
believe that is the case, though some of his peers at NPR are also
acceptable to Fox.
They regard principled opponents of the war to be "seditious and
corrupt Leftists ... everywhere, pro-islamofascist-terrorist
radical[s]... as a conservative defender of American virtues (what's
left of them) in the tradition of Samuel Clemens, I find this sort of
reflexive and childish response offensive, but not surprising coming
from fans of Neil Conan.

Their position is that Neil Conan... had the courage and the
intellectual honesty to pierce the mourning veil... they called
Conan's cowardly and snarky attack her "jump the shark moment."

I'd like to ask who else on this list feels that Cindy Sheehan was, in
fact, magnificent in how she handled the little creep, and in fact it
is NPR that jumped the shark - and if so, when?

Back to the hearings - a few of the senators are making some attempt
to pin down the future Chief Weasil of the Supreme Court. The NPR sock
puppets have laughed at their efforts to "lay a glove on him", calling
them "inquisitors."

Really terrible stuff. I wish I was listening to Democracy Now! instead.

I used to rank NPR below programs like Democracy Now! and above
network news. I have to report that ABCs coverage of the New Orleans
flood was far better than NPRs. It was more independent, more
hard-hitting, more informative. It is a sorry, sorry time for public

I close with some more bracing coverage of Roberts than the spineless
mush we've been hearing on NPR.

On the Far Right of a Far Right Party
The Brief on Judge Roberts
By ELAINE CASSEL

I have to admit that I was fooled by the Cleaver family images
displayed by the Roberts family that sultry July night. Not a bad guy,
I thought. Doesn't look like a Scalia. Doesn't talk like a Scalia.
Maybe President Bush won't make good on his nuclear-type promises to
put a Thomas or Scalia on the high court. Maybe Roberts will be a guy
with a nice demeanor, a bright man and one who is - as judges should
be - fair and open-minded.

No such luck. While others were sleeping, I was up reading memoranda
and briefs from days when Roberts was a political operative disguised
as a lawyer working in the Reagan administration. It did not take long
for the nice-guy image to fade. In its place is a judge in the mold of
Scalia more than Thomas, one who is mightily impressed with himself
and his intellect and one who does not care a flip for everyday
Americans.

When he and his fellow "conservatives" talk about not "legislating
from the bench," what they mean is that the 14th Amendment that
guarantees constitutional rights to all Americans, regardless of what
state they live in, should, in effect, be abolished. The Bush line on
"legislating from the bench" means that the courts should not protect
the people from governments who interfere with those rights so
inimical to American values - freedom of religion, press, speech,
freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures, and due process and
reproductive rights.

Roe v. Wade was third in a line of cases that struck state laws
against contraception. If you think that Roe v. Wade won't be reversed
in the next few years with Roberts in the majority, you are living in
a dream world. Roberts writes contemptuously about Roe v. Wade and the
right of women to have any say over their own bodies. Any state laws
that prohibit end-of-life decision making by competent adults would
also be in jeopardy.

Legislating from the bench was what led the court to reject separate
but equal education. After all, Brown v. Board of Education was about
as activist a decision as one could imagine, overturning a prior
decision, Plessy v. Ferguson. States would be, in the Roberts scheme,
free to return to segregated education. This may not apply for black
people - perhaps we have advanced enough that black and white children
can learn together - but were Texas, for instance, to want to
segregate Hispanic children from "white" children, Roberts would think
that would be just fine.

Roberts would add one more vote to legislating from the bench as the
court seeks to roll back the laws that protect the environment.
Roberts' judicial decisions, memoranda and arguments as a private
attorney come down on the side of big business and against the
environment. Roberts would like to strip Congress and the federal
agencies of the power to make our air and water safe. Leave it to the
states, he would argue, and let the big businesses make their deals
with state legislatures.

Roberts would like to overturn federal laws and regulations that bring
a modicum of justice to everyday citizens. Like the Voting Rights Act.
Roberts came out strongly against portions of it as a lawyer working
in the Reagan White House. He argued that blacks did not have to have
"real" voting rights - the government just had to make people think
that they had some rights.

Those who claim not to know what Roberts thinks have not done their
homework. Roberts is at the far-right of a far-right party, the party
that thinks it has the corner on being right. Roberts may be right for
the powerful and the wealthy, but he is not right for ordinary
Americans, those of us who pay his salary.

We need a people's Supreme Court. Like George Bush, Roberts was born
into privilege. In his world view, the privileged and the powerful own
the playground and the marbles. The rest of us may as well go home and
do as we're told.

[CanYoAssDigIt] Fwd: [B-52'S] BIG B-52'S NEW COMING SOON!

Umm... let me guess... Ricky Wilson is still alive? It was actually
The Changling who died on his behalf, so he could go into hiding and
re-emerge just when we need him the most to defeat the forces of evil?

Okay, but what if you're the potent one and she finds one who's impotent? It could happen.
