[CanYoAssDigIt] Happened more than 15 minutes ago, and therefore not news

>From an interesting blog at
http://digbysblog.blogspot.com/2005_05_15_digbysblog_archive.html

"Some of the same M.P.'s took a particular interest in an emotionally
disturbed Afghan detainee who was known to eat his feces and mutilate
himself with concertina wire. The soldiers kneed the man repeatedly in
the legs and, at one point, chained him with his arms straight up in
the air, Specialist Callaway told investigators. They also nicknamed
him "Timmy," after a disabled child in the animated television series
"South Park." One of the guards who beat the prisoner also taught him
to screech like the cartoon character, Specialist Callaway said.

Eventually, the man was sent home.

There's some South Park Republicans for you."

I'm sure "Timmy" feels better now that Paris and Nicole have kissed
and made up, though!

[CanYoAssDigIt] Re: [Fiends] Scary, Disturbing, Terrifying

I fear the United States government.

Imagine the nightmare scenario of being a taxi driver with no
relationship to any terrorism or armed or unarmed resistance of any
kind, and being kidnapped, and beaten so severely that your legs were
turned to pulp, and then dying of your injuries.

An Afghan named Dilawar did not have to imagine it - because it
happened to him. Now he imagines nothing at all, ever again.

The United States government delivered a nightmare much worse than
Michael Harlan Lyman's to Dilawar, as it has to hundreds and thousands
of innocent people since the beginning of the war on terror. It was
doing it before of course, but in smaller numbers, and they felt they
had to hide it then.

They say that chickens come home to roost. If this is so, we won't
have to ever stretch our imaginations again when it comes to horror.
Any zeal we might have had to celebrate Halloween will be dampened by
the real horror and terror that will be visited upon us, as payback
for criminal sadistic actions carried out in our names, which we did
too little to stop.

Happy Halloween, indeed

[CanYoAssDigIt] Re: [OregonDems_etc] Fwd:Lieberman Loves Him Some Hastert

Well, let's try to keep a little perspective on this.  16-year-olds aren't children, they're adolescents. They are regarded as able to operate as adults in certain arenas; they can be licensed to drive automobiles, and even to marry in some places.

The whole page thing is extremely useful to the scions of well-connected families to learn how to advance in the corrupt and unwholesome environment of politics.  There have been enough page scandals that I never would send any offspring of mine into this environment, but if I wanted the fruit of my lions to grow up to be Monica Lewinsky or Steve Gobie, I couldn't think if a better training ground.

If sane people made the rules, the tradition of pages would have been abolished decades or centuries ago, but these things are run by people like Paris Hilton's parents, and while they may profess to be shocked, I tell you, shocked that these things are going on in Babylon on the Potomac, they don't really have much reason to be.

I misremembered that Steve Gobie was a page, but upon reviewing Barney Frank's Wikipedia page, I see that he wasn't.  But still, this was a pretty unsavory jam Frank got himself into, and survived by standing his ground.  Can you blame the Republicans for circling the wagons - would you want to be without Barney Frank?  At any rate, there is no shortage of sex scandals among Democrats - Many of them are horndogs too, drunk on booze and power. Enjoy this while you can, it will be cutting the other way soon enough.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barney_Frank

In 1990, the House voted to reprimand Frank when it was revealed that Steve Gobie, a male prostitute that Rep. Frank had befriended after hiring him through a personal advertisement, had conducted a prostitution ring from Frank's apartment when he was not at home. Frank had dismissed Gobie earlier that year after learning of Gobie's activities.

The Boston Globe, among others, called on Frank to resign, but he refused. The House Ethics Committee recommended Frank be reprimanded because he "reflected discredit upon the House" by using his congressional office to fix 33 of Gobie's parking tickets. Attempts to expel or censure Frank failed; instead the House voted 408-18 to reprimand him. This condemnation was not reflected in Frank's district, where he won re-election in 1990 with 66 percent of the vote, and has won by larger margins ever since.

Lieberman Loves Him Some Hastert

Joe Lieberman takes yet another swing at Democrats who want to "politicize" the gross mismangement by his Republican friends that led to the online sexual solicitation of minors who were under their protection.  As he told the Courant:

"The Foley case bothers people," he added. "If anyone thinks they can make this into another partisan flap, it's not. It's very real and human. The House Republican leaders and, frankly, the Democratic leadership, should not make it partisan."

Hey Harry Reid, he's talkin' about you. Are you gonna take that — again?

Ned Lamont :

"The fact that Joe Lieberman says calling for Hastert's resignation is too `partisan' demonstrates that he's been in Washington so long that he can't recognize the difference between what's right and what's partisan."

Sirota :

Many have been disgusted with Lieberman's refusal to hold the White House accountable when it came to the Iraq War, and his vicious attacks on those who have criticized the war. But this goes from disgusting to nauseating. Watching him, you think you are watching a smarmy politician in a B comedy movie about Washington. You know, the guy who goes before cameras to claim to be a moral pious man, and then turns around, pockets a huge amount of Republican cash from moneymen funding the legal defense of indicted government officials, and then goes back out and attacks those demanding action to deal with the cover up of a child sexual predator scandal.

Put another way, this is the kind of behavior that confirms all the awful stereotypes people think about politicians. As Lamont told reporters today in reiterating his call for Hastert to resign immediately , people in Washington like Lieberman are reacting to this story as if children are just props in morally challenged politicians' never-ending quest to hold onto power. It's sick and its wrong - and it's time for a change.

The memory of Holy Joe on the floor of the Senate being his sanctimonious, scolding, old-maid self makes it — if possible — even worse.

Jeebus he is a sickening, degenerate, soulless, bought-and-paid-for DC insider hack.

[CanYoAssDigIt] I will pull down a mighty reckoning on Hugo Chávez

No wonder Hugo Chávez is so unpopular with Bizarros. The following
from the NY Times:

***

At a news conference after his spirited address to the United Nations
on Wednesday, President Hugo Chávez of Venezuela expressed one regret:
not having met that icon of the American left, the linguist Noam
Chomsky, before his death.

Yesterday, a call to Mr. Chomsky's house found him very much alive. In
fact, he was struggling through "10,000 e-mails" he had received since
the remarks by Mr. Chávez, who urged Americans to read one of Mr.
Chomsky's books instead of watching Superman and Batman movies, which
he said "make people stupid."

***

The nerve of that guy, he dares to mock the fans of the Dark Night and
the Man of Steel!! I'm gonna go role an 18, put on my cape and cowl,
and open up a can of whup ass on this Mr. Cheetos or whatever his name
is. My ultimate triumph is assured. I have 10 points of
invulnerability, and I am wearing boots of escaping (just like this:

[CanYoAssDigIt] Re: [ I F S ] SSS looking for a MySpace Savvy Fan

"Austin moved to LA, he's living in Kara Dioguardi's home in
Hollywood Hills. (she was a judge on the show and a very successful

That's a cozy arrangement, but I'm sure she was 100% impartial as a judge.

Check us out, nobody is living in anybody's bedroom in this band, we are totally on our own:

Well, Nigel lives in a bedroom in Mark's house, but I'd argue it's appropriate.  NIgel is Mark's son.

We're just a nice bunch of guys with a nice bunch of songs.

IS THAT SO WRONG?!?

A note from Brian at JPFOLKS

We have about a half dozen problems holding us up from posting the
nominations. Once we fix or resolve them, we'll create the final
pages to post all the nominees. We have somewhere in the ballpark of
2000 nominees this year.
80 album categories,
67 Song categories,
4 Video categories and
the Lyric Category. (Not to mention all the Founders awards stuff
but we don't post those nominees).
Hang in there for another day or two and we should get this all
finished!

FLM SOCIETY MUSIC

512 345-5797

This performance of Mary K. Shanahan's Cchild of the Chain TM
includes the Austin premier of Rudy Davenport's September 11, a
composition for piano that Executive Producer Mary K. Shanahan
calls "one of the most emotionally overwhelming pieces I have ever
heard. Rudy captured the horror, the anguish and the shock ... as
well as the heroism on that day. It is raw, unnerving and healing at
the same time."

Davenport, an Austin composer, was recently contacted about his
newest chamber music offering Byna, by the Kennedy Center for the
Performing Arts in Washington D.C.

Byna, which premiered (with funding from The National Endowment for
the Arts) to rave reviews in the Southeast last year, is a song
cycle composed for soprano, oboe, cello and piano. Current
discussions are to add it to Kennedy Center's schedule later this
year, if all members of the original ensemble are available.

Davenport will also be performing several compositions written with
Mary K. Shanahan, and a new arrangement of Jesus Wept which was
written by two other Texans, Mary Dawson and Bruce Greer, and
pitched to Shanahan after a soft debut of Child of the Chain TM at
One World Theatre last year. Shanahan recorded the compelling song
about Christ at Bismeaux Studios for radio two weeks ago under the
watchful eye of Gospel Music's Grammy winning songwriter/producer
Chris Morris with Davenport on piano, Rich Brotherton on acoustic
guitar, Jacob Lowery on bass, Omar Lopez on violin, and Jason
Meekins providing percussion.

Mary K. Shanahan's Child of the Chain TM, was inspired by her
national charting single on Christian radio of the same name. This
new live performance offering gives Mary a platform to showcase her
work ... as well as that of other Texas songwriters and composers
she feels need to be heard. Part of the mission of the show is to
pass down new hymns and songs to young artists. On September 8th,
Andrew Cannata, a student at St. Edwards University will be a
featured performer. Shanahan, who is a past two term president of
the Austin Songwriter's Group, has been a formidable advocate for
Texas music behind the scenes for years. She takes her passion for
Texas songwriters to another level on
September 8th at

8:00 p.m. at
Emmaus,
1718 Lohman's Crossing in Lakeway.

Here was an answer to a question an artist asked me:

you may have different issues in the area of micropayments with some
of the services where people pay a monthly fee to rent songs and the
companies make small payments for each time a song is played

but right now the bulk of the sales are taking play from sales of
singles and CDs on itunes
here's a list of the companies
http://cdbaby.net/dd?f=4

and here's the totals for CDBaby on

which digital retailers have paid how much
http://cdbaby.org/stories/06/02/08/8880755.html

which pretty much shows you itunes is the 500 pound gorilla of
digital downloads and
(so far) everything else isn't of much significance

you might also need to figure out how to do accounting for
when a person buys a whole CD for 9.99
but I think you just look at
how many songs there are on the CD and
how much money is received

I don't think the 9.1 cents per song should change
which means the artist and label have less to split

Hi Ande,

It's more of a promotional tool for her and there probably isn't

[CanYoAssDigIt] Fwd: CBS, NBC Clean Up Bush's 'Happy' Talk

Mighty nice of them. It reinforces my opinion that as soon as he
leaves office, we will learn what his damage is - like Reagan, any
thinking person can see there's something seriously wrong with that
chimp, though with everybody conspiring to cover it up, it's hard to
know what it is.

With Reagan it was Alzheimers - with Bush - who knows? Rocking back
and forth - Autism?

CBS, NBC Clean Up Bush's 'Happy' Talk

8/24/06

During his August 21 press conference, George W. Bush responded to a
question about the Iraq War by saying that "sometimes I'm happy" about
the conflict. But many readers and TV viewers never heard the remark,
since journalists edited the statement to save Bush any possible
embarrassment.

Bush's unedited comment was as follows:

Q: But are you frustrated, sir?

BUSH: Frustrated? Sometimes I'm frustrated. Rarely surprised.
Sometimes I'm happy. This is -- but war is not a time of joy. These
aren't joyous times. These are challenging times, and they're
difficult times, and they're straining the psyche of our country. I
understand that.

Viewers of CBS Evening News (8/21/06) saw a carefully edited version
of that response—one better suited to presenting Bush as serious and
concerned with the effects of the war. Reporter Bill Plante previewed
the answer by saying that Bush "conceded that daily reports of death
and destruction take a toll, both on the nation and on him." The
edited quote that followed:

Frustrated? Sometimes I'm frustrated, rarely surprised. These aren't
joyous times. These are challenging times, and they're difficult
times. And they're straining the psyche of our country. I understand
that.

CBS was not alone in massaging Bush's response—many outlets excised
Bush's "happy" remark, or found other ways to clean up Bush's
performance. NBC Nightly News (8/21/06) worked around Bush's awkward
answer; reporter Kelly O'Donnell noted that Bush "offered an unusual
glimpse into his thinking," but then proceeded to edit the comments to
Bush's advantage:

BUSH: Frustrated? Sometimes I'm frustrated. Rarely surprised.

O'DONNELL: ...and acknowledged Iraq's weight on the nation.

BUSH: They're difficult times, and they're straining the psyche of
our country. I understand that.

So instead of airing Bush's "happy" remark, NBC's reporter stressed
the fact that Bush was serious about Iraq's "weight on the nation."

Print outlets also generally left out Bush's remark and praised his
performance. The New York Times (8/22/06) interpreted Bush's
"occasionally rocking back and forth" as a sign that he was "generally
upbeat," while the Los Angeles Times was more effusive: "Bush's
appearance suggested he was settling into a pattern of regular,
wide-ranging interactions with reporters in which he can appear
confident and presidential" (8/22/06).

Of course, Bush can only appear that way if the press decides to
present his comments in the most flattering light. With the Iraq War
widely unpopular with the public, many viewers may have found Bush
saying that it sometimes made him "happy" jarring and distasteful. CBS
and NBC apparently thought it was more appropriate to shield viewers
from Bush's words—and, perhaps more importantly, shield the White
House from that public response.

ACTION: Contact CBS and NBC and ask them why they decided that Bush's
comments about the Iraq War making him "happy" should be excised from
their reporting.

[CanYoAssDigIt] Re: Fwd: Unable to deliver your message

hey, that's ok, I dig free speech, even irresponsible speech.

I've been expecting this for a while - the crime of seditious libel is alive and well in the rank and file!  And with seditious libel, if what you say is true, it magnifies the crime.

It's pretty amusing that on a list well subscribed to by the foil hat crowd and extremists of every stripe, that a mild, persistent devotion to fairness and facts gets one banned.  Sure I've had a little mild fun at Bill Clinton's expense - but it's notthing compared to the wild slander thrown at prominent democrats by democrat lovers like Holly and Liberal Girl (can you tell me - are they the same person?  That would be just about one of the saddest and silliest things I've heard of in a while - somebody joining their own list under another identity, and then praising themselves for saying such smart things - but that is about the only way Holly is going to hear that, and I don't know how else soembody who's been on a list less than a month is a moderator!)

But all of this is pretty much what I expected - this is only the latest time of several that I've been thankful that amateur inquisitors are only that, and don't wield any power in the real world!

There is something wrong with my gmail account. I attempted to reply to your e-mail via the list.  It certainly can't be that I've been banned by Holly for pointing out obvious things like Joe Lieberman is a Democrat, or that Bill Clinton is a horndog.

It certainly can't be that I've been banned here in the land of the free, home of the brave, home of free speech and all those yummy things that the republicans hate, but the democrats love.

I'm sure it's just a passing problem, and I'll soon be posting factual, useful, logical posts to the list again - the kind the list really, really needs.   Please communicate this to other folks.
