[ItsAllAboutMeMan] Re: [The-Man-In-The-Mirror-2009] Digest Number 1

I wish Obama had a socialist agenda - we could use one right now, instead of the socialism for the rich that he and the republican candidates advocate. Who's going to look out for the poor?  You're on your own buddy, bailouts are for real men, for sissies, it's a cardboard box on the street.

If John McCain applied for a civil service job, surely they would be interested in his history of collaborating with the enemy during wartime (see for example http://www.vietnamveteransagainstjohnmccain.com/ or more specifically http://www.vietnamveteransagainstjohnmccain.com/cin_declassified_landing.htm

And then there's his running mate, with her ties to the Alaskan Independence Party, an organization that believes in sussession of the State of Alaska from the US (all over the web, use your google).  I would think that civil service would reject her application in a heartbeat.

Federal civil service have to undergo annual evaluations on their knowledge of the constitution.  The current idiot-in-chief who has dismissed it as "just a piece of paper" wouldn't have a pot to crap in (let alone a copy of the constitution to wipe himself with) if he had to take that test.  Sarah Palin says she reads "all the newspapers" but couldn't name one, what chance would she have?

No, my friends, these are dire times, that's why we need change you can trust. Vote for Rick Reed, he's milder, much milder.

[ItsAllAboutMeMan] Fwd: Video by Brian-C for Sandman The Rapping Cowboy and Obama

I do not support Barach Obama. I already voted for somebody else. But I would not want to deny the psychological uplift that Obama supporters will get from this very cool and fun video by refusing to forward it. That would be churlish.

[ItsAllAboutMeMan] Re: [progressive] "'Muslim' shouldn't be a slur" [ Constance Rice op-ed 10/15/08 LA Times]

Today I got a facebook friend request from somebody I used to be in close proximity in the real world. He's an academic, an anthropologist with a special interest in egypt. He's also about as causasian as they come - like me, yet his facebook name is (something like) "John Hussein Smith."

That is, his birthname, with the new middle name Hussein inserted.  I think it's brilliant. For at least the foreseeable future, my name is now Matt Hussein Love, and in the spirit of Sparticus, I hope everybody reading this will consider doing the same.

Opinion

'Muslim' shouldn't be a slur

Both McCain and Obama should condemn implicit attacks on Muslims and Arabs.
By Constance L. Rice

October 15, 2008

Excuse me, but when did the words "Muslim" and "Arab" become acceptable epithets?

I'm not a Muslim, and perhaps I was slow to see this coming. Four months ago, I blithely advised a group at a local mosque not to obsess over the anti-Muslim undertones of the presidential campaign. At that point, Barack Obama was defending his Christian bona fides against "accusations" of "being a Muslim" (as if it had suddenly become a Class-D felony), but was doing so without condemning the implicit slurs against Islam, Muslims and Arabs.

In a "don't worry, be happy" tone, I breezily noted that although the stoking of racial fear and xenophobia was a cherished tradition of American politics, I really didn't think that this time around the candidates would permit the wholesale slander of Islam or Muslims.

Apparently, I was wrong. The undertones have become screaming overtones. And it is past time to object.

If it wasn't clear before, it became crystal clear last week in the aftermath of Republican rallies. Fomenting fear to shore up drooping support, Republicans sadly used heated demagoguery about "palling around with terrorists," about "Barack Hussein Obama" and about how Obama doesn't "see America like you and I," words that mixed subliminally to conflate "terror" with "Muslim" and to whip crowds into xenophobic anger. After his enraged supporters were recorded uttering death threats and racial slurs, McCain was forced on several occasions to try to tamp down the anger in the audience and to defend his opponent.

That was a good step one -- until McCain blew it. A woman stood up in the audience and said that she just couldn't trust Obama because, as she put it, "he's an Arab." McCain shook his head, took the microphone and said: "No, ma'am. He's a decent family man, citizen, that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues."

So, what is he saying? Arabs aren't decent family men? They can't be citizens?

The fact is, neither McCain nor Obama -- who continues to combat absurd attacks on his Americanness -- has been willing to speak out against the implicit slurs against Arabs and Islam.

Is it really too difficult for Obama to respond: "For the hundredth time, I am a Christian, and if you are suggesting that there is something wrong with Islam or being a Muslim, you are wrong"?

Would it be so hard for McCain to say: "There is no room in my campaign or in America for religious or ethnic intolerance -- that's what we're fighting against"?

Maybe I missed the denunciations amid all the hoopla over field-dressing moose, but it looks like the next ice age will arrive before the NAACP, the National Conference of Christians and Jews or the Anti-Defamation League loudly objects to the implicit defamation of Muslims and Arabs that has seeped into this presidential campaign.

Women rightly protested gender bias during Hillary Clinton's run, but we failed to strongly challenge the earlier bias against Mormons during Mitt Romney's bid, and we are currently failing to refute the anti-Muslim bias embedded in the assaults on Obama.

It is a failure we need to correct now.

Think About Setting "Presidents" With Laser Hair Removal

Have you noticed that Presidential elections always seem to revolve
around hair as much as issues? George Washington's powdered ponytail
and Abraham Lincoln's beard were primary characteristics of their
appearance and came to represent firm leadership and thoughtful
concern for the public.

How Much Does Laser Hair Removal Cost? Less Than You Might Think!

One of the biggest questions women have when considering the best way
to remove unwanted hair is "How much does laser hair removal cost?"
Not only does it cost less than you might think, but the benefits of
undergoing this procedure make it a very worthwhile investment. Have
you always been curious about laser hair removal but have always
thought it was out of reach for you, financially?

Concerns About Laser Hair Removal Side Effects

People are enthusiastic about permanent laser hair removal, and for
good reason. Just the idea of saying goodbye to embarrassing bodily or
facial hair is like a dream. Even though the procedure is becoming
more and more common every day, worries about laser hair removal side
effects is still a legitimate concern.

[ItsAllAboutMeMan] People in Smoky Lake sure know how to have a good time

Yesterday Anne went to Smoky Lake for the Great White North Pumpkin Fair and Weigh-Off.  I've seen giant pumpkins in newspapers and on TV, it seemed like a good idea to go see some first hand.

It was somewhat disappointing, the two largest were slightly under 800 pounds (out in the hinterlands they still resist metric). We were told both were the offspring of a mammoth half-tonner.

These overgrown orange vegetables are the flora version of those grossly obese people that can't get out of bed – they just sort of sprawl across the platform like Jabba the Hutt.

We stayed for the auction, but when we found out they weren't auctioning off the biggest ones, we left.  Not that we were in for the bidding.  But with the dwarfish 150 pounders going for a couple hundred dollars each, we were curious what a pumpkin 5x that big would bring.

On the way out of town, we saw a huge crane, several stories high, with a large pumpkin (which we recognized from earlier in the day) attached.  This particular one looked like a beanbag chair, and we got a couple pictures of it on my cell phone (we neglected to bring the camera).  The pumpkin was suspended over a car.  We had a pretty good idea what was going to happen, but we didn't know when, so we kept going.

A ways up the road, we stopped at a gas station for drinks.  We noticed that we could still see the crane behind the trees, and we could hear the murmur of the crowd.  Then, as we watched, the pumpkin ascended into view, and we could hear the murmuring increase in volume.  Up, up, up it went until it was as high as it could go.

A moment later, and it fell abruptly out of sight behind the trees.  A few moments later (we were far enough away that the lag between the audio and visual signals was quite noticeable) we heard the loud report of a gigantic pumpkin smashing into a car, and the pandemonium of the crowd.

Next year, we will go back with our camera, and our video camera as well.  And I just got an idea for a great name for a rock band.

[ItsAllAboutMeMan] mattlove1 sent you a video: "Blood Paradise-Baby Harpoon"

YouTube - Broadcast Yourself Help Centre | email options | report spam

mattlove1 has shared a video with you on YouTube:

I posted this comment on their vid:

You guys have proved you are worthy of the name, that's for sure. Someday I hope your Blood Paradise and mine will get together for a joint performance. In the mean time, open two browser windows and listen to this song and "Don't think its not impossible" at the same time, your kundalini will rise and your third nostril will open, it sounds like a posse of rough boys tying up a bunch of smelly old hippies and beating them with kielbasas.
this is our first song as a band together...in this video we're missing our bass player/lead singer.
i hope you enjoy it...it's not all that good but we're a new band and we're just trying to get people to hear our first song

thanks

[ItsAllAboutMeMan] Now We Know

This is my Amazon.com profile which I wrote about four years back.

My final paragraph interests me the most:  "I am deeply concerned about the direction this country is headed, and I expect things to get worse before they get better, and I have no idea when that will be. But thats just me, I hope I'm wrong."

Well, now we know exactly what form the getting worse took, and as usual, I wasn't wrong.

***

Hello mutants

I grew up in Wenatchee WA, where I didn't spend much of my childhood fending off war parties composed of the original population of the valley, nor did I hitch my horse on main street, or teach myself to write by practicing with a lump of coal on the back of a shovel, though incredibly at the time our more cosmopolitan neighbors on what we called the coast (Seattle, then really just a large town) believed that sort of thing went on there. It was a congenial enough place to grow up, but once grown up it was hard to get used to chronic unemployment hovering around to 1/3 of the population that wanted to work, and politics almost universally to the right of Genghis Khan.

After I married my high school sweetheart (a move that would cast a shadow over much of my adult life) and speckled academic and vocational stints that included time at Wenatchee Valley College and Central Washington University, and directing Community Theatre in Chelan, I voted with my feet in the early 80s and moved to Olympia, which I had been told was the land of milk and honey. I was misinformed. After avoiding the Reagan-era hollowed out economy by spending additional time at South Puget Sound Community College and Evergreen (where I finally graduated with a double major in underwater basket weaving and latte serving). After a tough year, I got a job at the Dept. of Transportation, where I have hunkered down like a barnacle on a rock ever since.

Fairly early in my career, my marriage mercifully disintegrated, and I became the single custodial parent of a young daughter.

The downward spiral reversed with remarriage about 6 years ago, and a realization that I had a knack for meeting peoples information needs at work. Though I have never strayed for from entry-level positions at the Department, I am one of the most highly honored employees in the agency for innovative practices. Whats wrong with this picture? My wife encouraged me to return to school, and learn skills that will propel me into a better workplace. I gradually work towards that goal, while continuing to work full time.

Daughter grown and out of the house, and my wife being self-reliant and low maintenance, I have the luxury of having a personal life again, and much of my spare time goes towards musical activities.

My wife and I have property on Anderson Island, and have lived on it for several months. I am torn between trying to achieve vocational success before retirement, and becoming an island dwelling hermit. The Pierce County library system maintains a branch there, which is open 4 hours a week. I think I could find that a very congenial schedule to maintain. I have put in my application.

I am deeply concerned about the direction this country is headed, and I expect things to get worse before they get better, and I have no idea when that will be. But thats just me, I hope I'm wrong.
