[ItsAllAboutMeMan] A blast from the past

I got this instant message and I did my usual pitch the bot some shit routine. It turned out to be a real person, imagine my surprise. Especially when she came on with the sexy talk, I thought it was just a pitch for sex chat for pay... anyway, we are friends to this day (five years later!)

janechua29: hi

janechua29: i saw your profile and your photo amazed me
valis2001us: Yes, I was voted one of the 10 ugliest men on yahoo. it
is pretty amazing
janechua29: guess the person itself is much more better than that

valis2001us: I see that you " RECRUIT AND SUPPLY BANDS TO:
UAE,INDIA,BURMA,THAILAND,INDONISIA,KOREA,CHINA,JAPAN AND MALAYSIA" I
have a friend who lives in UAE. He is not crazy about living there.
valis2001us: I am very excited about doing music with these guys. It's
the first song we've finished. It's amazing what you can do in a
living room with a computer now. To my ears it sounds like it could
have come out of a studio
janechua29: very nice music
janechua29: do you plan to do more?
valis2001us: I asked if you knew Leo Flores because he claims he helps
manage Kitchie Nadal and
Barbie Almabis and Aliya Parcs - I don't know if I believe him!
valis2001us: We have some more stuff in progess now... my hope is that
we can just keep coming out with the stuff...
janechua29: Leo Flores?
janechua29: from where?
valis2001us: this is what he says about himself: Hello Everyone,

My name is Leo Flores from Manila, Philippines. I am working to market
to the international community the beautiful and talented singer named
Aliya Parcs. To know more about her please checkout her Yahoo Group.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Aliya_Parcs_Rulz/

I would be willing to arrange for her to sing and interpret the songs
you will compose. Hope to see you on her Yahoo Group. Thanks.

Manager

valis2001us: and also this:
valis2001us: I used to live and work in the United States and does
travel to and fro the US. My last employment is with
Enron. Since everything should be based on trust, you
can call the toll free number of Enron and my complete
name is Leoncio Flores. You can verify the
authenticity of my identity.

I used to live in Detroit, San Francisco and last in
Houston. I'm an IT Project Manager.

I'm really interested in marketing Aliya in the
international market though she might not become
popular in the United States, her exposure there will
be lloked upon in the Philippines as an achievement
for the Filipino people.

Say for example Jasmine Trias, she finished third in
American Idol last year and though she lives in Hawaii
and has Filipino bloodline, it made the country proud.

valis2001us: That is what I plan for Aliya. Even if she just makes
some Gigs in some popular local clubs or bars in your
city, it could be something that we can say in the
Philippines as an achievement. Your country is the
standard bar for performers.

By the way American songs in the Philippines are big
hots all the time. So when someday Aliya can
collaborate with song writers in the US, your songs
could be played overseas as well as there. We plan to
have Aliya sing to the Filipino community in America
also.

Hope this could be a start of an Artistic Partnership.
Thanks and have a nice day.

janechua29: do they have company name?
valis2001us: It says at the end "Leo Flores
Manager
Flores counsulting"  - it looks like he's a one person shop.  that's
why I doubt his story - these women seem well known in the
phillipines.
janechua29:
valis2001us: But you know, you are talking to me right now, and I can
see that you are for real, so maybe he is too
janechua29: we have lots of pretty and good singers fr phil
valis2001us: yes. Leo says that to make any kind of appearance in the
US is good publicity for them.  I was scouting around for places
here... but he stopped writing

janechua29: i only put their live demo
valis2001us: Well I hope to hear some of them some day. Maybe on the
radio!  There is a very large asian population on the West Coast.
Increasingly media from their home cultures is available here.

MTV Promotes Asian Pop Music in U.S.

Morning Edition, July 13, 2005 · MTV launches three Asian pop music
channels aimed at U.S. Asians and South Asians. The U.S. music
industry is increasingly promoting Asian musicians to young Asian
Americans. And Asian American kids are turning on their non-Asian
friends to the music.
valis2001us: I don't want to get too political, but I think the US is
in a period of decline.  Things are very vibrant in Korea,

there anything I can do for you?  You are striking out on an

[ItsAllAboutMeMan] Re: I saw a poster downtown for your organization

In general, it's probably better to NOT put the totallyawesome email address out all over the place if you don't want people to use it.

I was under the misapprehension you were looking for new people because of what it says on the facebook page (another location where you use the totally awesome email address, btw):  "New Beat needs more members! If you are interested, please email us at totallyawesome@umich.edu!"

But my mistake, I didn't realize that your most "Recent News" update was April 14, 2009. My bad, I guess.

I am not a student; if you're only interested in attacting student involvement, maybe you should keep that in mind when you post things in downtown Ann Arbor which is occassionally frequented by people other than U of M students, at least it was last time I looked.

However, if the Battle fo the Bands is open to non-student bands, I invite the 40 people on this list to assess and enjoy one of my songs:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWHfbryRIqE

Thank you for your consideration.

Hi Matt,

If you want to contact the group, please reach me directly as totallyawesome is sent out to over 40 people's inboxes.

I am the president of the student organization and we have no need for volunteers as we have 40 members in this popular group. If you are a student at the university you are welcome to join our group and get involved in concert planning. Just send me your uniqname and I'll have it added to the totallyawesome list serve.

Thanks for your interest, I encourage your band to send a submission for our battle of the bands. Please send some tracks to nbh.battle@aol.com

Anyway, it seems you are looking for volunteers, if you don't mind having an Abe Simpson-like geezer hanging around, I'm interested.

I rather get the impression (after having two completely innocuous posts on the facebook page deleted) that you are in fact not interested in this, but I thought I would give it one more shot.

[ItsAllAboutMeMan] Re: Tuesday's Elections were a huge success: 2012 starts now

Hey thanks for the information, Rachel.

I think the real problem is not people who don't vote - who could blame them?  The problem is a lack of people to vote for.

As long as young voters (and old voters) have to chose between the right wing and the far right wing of the corporate party, what difference does it make if the don't vote, vote once, or vote a dozen times?

Please let me know what you're doing about that.

Sincerely,

Matt Love

Matt, Tuesday was a good day for the League. After months of tireless effort to register and educate voters, we succeeded in getting out the youth vote on a massive scale! It wasn't easy, and we could not have done it without your generous support.

2012 is just around the corner. Will you make a tax-deductible investment in our future?

  • In Maine, we educated 16,000 voters on Ranked Choice Voting prior to the first mayoral election in 88 years.
  • In Wisconsin, our Voter ID campaign enabled 2,000 young people (and counting) to get the IDs needed to vote in 2012.
  • In Texas, we helped keep Voter ID out of the election and debuted our Life-Long Voters campaign to train 25 young Houston leaders on grassroots organizing.
  • In Ohio, 1,900 young people pledged to vote in 2011.

The key to all of this? Teamwork (and an awkward victory dance or two). The numbers reflect the endless energy of our dedicated organizers and volunteers, who build effective campaigns on a shoestring budget. Our commitment to long-term organizing and innovative trainings enable us to build local movements that win, year after year.

Will you contribute $20, $50, or $100 to our inspiring young organizers?

We could not have done this alone. Our team of progressive supporters enable us to build power in local communities, from off-election years to presidential election years.

Join us in kicking off 2012 the right way.

Cheers,

Rachel Bishop

P.S. Did I mention that it's tax-deductible?

[ItsAllAboutMeMan] Re: Please, get it together

Matt,

I apologize to you. I found the messages in my inbox notifiying me that I have new ideas to add to my list. I didn't see them because they were mailed out under the same header as the first message, and I overlooked them.

I believe I have put the blame in the wrong place. It would appeard that digital-democracy.org are responsible for the weakness of this application - it's not the technical design of the product, its the paucity of decent content that makes it nearly useless.

Here are today's figures:

http://www.allourideas.org/occupywallstreet?info=maintwitter
90076 votes on 68 ideas

digital-democracy.org, you only found 2 more ideas worth adding to the mix?  the results will have no scientific validity at this rate, if my choice is between "repeal the death tax" and "give everybody at a flat rate" there is no chance for good ideas to drive out bad ideas. Most of these ideas are medicre at best.... why not practice true democracy, and put ALL ideas up there, and let the hoi polloi sort out what they really want?

I believe your web tool is flawed. I brought it to your attention because your institution is the host of this web tool, is it not?  I want you to be aware that no new ideas are being added to the Occupy Wall Street (89409 votes on 66 ideas - the 1st number changes but the 2nd one doesn't). Many of these ideas are terrible, and don't encourage further involvement. The theory is the more people get involved, the better the questions, the better choices - well, you're the sociology guy, you tell me). I have personally attempted to add more ideas, but they do not appear. I thought, well I must be doing something wrong, but it seems unlikely that almost 90000 other people have visited the site, and nobody else has any new ideas to add, either.

Now if Digital Democracy has failed to upload ideas sent to them, shame on them (and shame on me).

But I can tell you that on the page I set up, there are 2 ideas (only one, really, the 2nd one reads "sample idea") - I attempted to add six more, unsuccessfully. As far as I know, I have never recieved any notification that there are more ideas to be considered for inclusion.

You really have to get this fixed.  I know what it's like dealing with organization IT departments. They make the guys in the British sitcom seem like wizards - but the lack of functionality of this site not only makes it useless, it makes people cynical about using these kind of tools at all.

Hello Matt,

I believe there is a misunderstanding here.  Ideas that are uploaded are sent to the idea marketplace creator (not allourideas.org) to be activated.  It is not our decision what ideas get activated and what ideas don't.  You can see this for yourself by uploading an idea to your own idea marketplace.

I hope this clarifies things and sorry for the confusion,
Matt

But I would get a lot more if your add choices function worked. As I have a lot of other good choices to present to people, and I want other people to present their good ideas, too (better than "end the inheritance tax" for example, one of the 66 choices over at Brand X occupy site.

You should be ashamed for recommending that site, it's terrible, should have been recommended by the Daily Bad. It has the same 66 choices it had when I first looked at it - a few good ideas, many trivial ones, a depressing number of bad ones. I suggested 20 more. None of them have appeared. It's not an exercise in democracy, it's an exercise in draining off time (like change.org, and moveon.org) that could be spent productively, in activism.

And these are the kind of ideas people will get to vote for on my page (when it starts working - it doesn't seem to be working any better than the page I'm complaining about - but the difference is, I will be persistent.  I can be very persistent.

[All Our Ideas] idea added to question: Would you rather spend your time productively, or have it wasted?

[ItsAllAboutMeMan] Re: When Kitten Wars Meets Occupy Wall Street

I just wanted to let you know what a terrible, lousy, shoddy site you've endorced, and call your attention personally to the comments that I've posted on the page that links to the terrible site. I will continue to bring this matter to the attention of the poeple that designed this terrible site until they fix it.  I would appreciate knowing if you will join the call to fix this thing. I feel sorry for the people who used this tool to supposedly get a message out and learn something. It's a disaster.

2 days later, and nothing has changed. However, I keep pressing the case for greater democracy, not the top down, filtered chopped and channeled kind:

But I would get a lot more if your add choices function worked. As I have a lot of other good choices to present to people, and I want other people to present their good ideas, too (better than "end the inheritance tax" for example, one of the 66 choices over at Brand X occupy site.

I promised my community that I would be persistent in addressing this problem on your website.

Thank you for your immediate attention.

Hey Daily Good readers, I recommend that you don't waste your time with that site, go to mine instead:

http://www.allourideas.org/occupypagesucks

I will press the webmaster as many times a day as it takes to make sure the list of ideas is updated, and my page works the way its supposed to. It's clear the people who made the other page don't care.

Clicking Your Way Through Occupy Wall Street's Biggest Demands
TODAY'S GOOD

30% open-source 20% collaborative 50% participatory

While pundits and reporters have bemoaned the lack of clarity on Occupy Wall Street's to-do list, a media nonprofit has taken a (not-so) radical approach to creating a unified agenda: asking people what matters most in a systematic way. New York City-based Digital Democracy is the organization behind OccupyVotes, a new web platform that lets users prioritize the various demands of the Occupy Wall Street movement. Making college free or taxing fossil fuels? Raising taxes on corporations or reducing interest on college loans? Voters select the concern that's more pressing, resulting in a ranked list of demands.

"What's cool is the system itself is totally open-sourced, transparent and accountable," says Digital Democracy president Max Belinsky. If voters don't see a relevant demand on the list, they can seed their own ideas into the voting platform's rotation. More than 23,000 people have voted since the tool was launched on October 16. The top idea thus far? "Repeal corporate personhood."

As part of Digital Democracy's mission of empowering marginalized communities to participate in the democratic process, Belinsky is eager to move the tool beyond the internet onto the streets of New York so that everyone can participate. "Can we make a physical voting booth where Grandma can walk up to it and start to vote even though she's never been on the internet?" he wonders. Or in Egypt, where Digital Democracy piloted the tool at the height of the revolution, could organizers drive an iPad-equipped pickup truck around the country to gather data on what matters most to people? Belinsky says the group is in talks with partners in Egypt to make that a reality. For now, look out for the voting platform on an occupier's smartphone near you.
