[ItsAllAboutMeMan] I hate it when Canadians act all wimpy and stuff

Some small satisfaction in responding to some really awful "journalism":

Iraq Oil Bid - Panel

What role foreign investment should play in developing Iraq's oil resources is a question that splits opinions, and Sabah Jawad and Thomas Basile joined Margaret Evans to discuss it.

Sabah Jawad is an Iraqi and is the spokesperson for Naftana. It's a support committee for the Iraqi Federation of Oil Unions. He joined us from London.

Thomas Basile is a communication's consultant and media commentator. He was senior press advisor for Paul Bremmer's Coalition Provisional Authority that governed Iraq after the 2003 invasion. He joined us from New York.

[notice how they don't mention that the liar is still on Bush's payroll:  http://www.whitehouse.gov/government/basile-bio.html . they only mention his past disservice.]

Here's the note I fired off to them:

It's more than a little nauseating to hear propagandists and liars like Thomas Basile - I would have liked to hear what  Sabah Jawad had to say, uninterrupted, rather than the stupid fairy tales I left the US to escape.

If I wanted that approach to balance - 50% for the facts, 50% for the lies, but particularly give the guy telling the truth a hard time, and a free pass to the liar - I'd listen to the US media.

more truth, please.  talk to these guys:

Oil Giants Get Ready to Return to Iraq
It Was Oil, All Along

By BILL MOYERS
and MICHAEL WINSHIP

Oh, no, they told us, Iraq isn't a war about oil. That's cynical and simplistic, they said. It's about terror and al Qaeda and toppling a dictator and spreading democracy and protecting ourselves from weapons of mass destruction. But one by one, these concocted rationales went up in smoke, fire, and ashes. And now the bottom line turns out to be....the bottom line. It is about oil.

Alan Greenspan said so last fall. The former chairman of the Federal Reserve, safely out of office, confessed in his memoir,

"...Everyone knows: the Iraq war is largely about oil." He elaborated in an interview with the Washington Post's Bob Woodward, "If Saddam Hussein had been head of Iraq and there was no oil under those sands, our response to him would not have been as strong as it was in the first gulf war."

Remember, also, that soon after the invasion, Donald Rumsfeld's deputy, Paul Wolfowitz, told the press that war was our only strategic choice. "...We had virtually no economic options with Iraq," he explained, "because the country floats on a sea of oil."
Shades of Daniel Plainview, the monstrous petroleum tycoon in the movie There Will Be Blood. Half-mad, he exclaims, "There's a whole ocean of oil under our feet!" then adds, "No one can get at it except for me!"

No wonder American troops only guarded the Ministries of Oil and the Interior in Baghdad, even as looters pillaged museums of their priceless antiquities. They were making sure no one could get at the oil except... guess who?

Here's a recent headline in The New York Times: "Deals with Iraq Are Set to Bring Oil Giants Back." Read on: "Four western companies are in the final stages of negotiations this month on contracts that will return them to Iraq, 36 years after losing their oil concession to nationalization as Saddam Hussein rose to power."

There you have it. After a long exile, Exxon Mobil, Shell, Total and BP are back in Iraq. And on the wings of no-bid contracts - that's right, sweetheart deals like those given Halliburton, KBR, Blackwater. The kind of deals you get only if you have friends in high places. And these war profiteers have friends in very high places.

Let's go back a few years to the 1990's, when private citizen Dick Cheney was running Halliburton, the big energy supplier. That's when he told the oil industry that, "By 2010 we will need on the order of an additional fifty million barrels a day. So where is the oil going to come from? While many regions of the world offer great oil opportunities, the Middle East, with two-thirds of the world's oil and the lowest cost, is still where the prize ultimately lies."

Fast forward to Cheney's first heady days in the White House. The oil industry and other energy conglomerates have been headed backdoor keys to the White House, and their CEO's and lobbyists were trooping in and out for meetings with their old opal, now Vice President Cheney. The meetings are secret, conducted under tight security, but as we reported five years ago, among the documents that turned up from some of those meetings were maps of oil fields in Iraq - and a list of companies who wanted access to them.

The conservative group Judicial Watch and the Sierra Club filed suit to try to find out who attended the meetings and what was discussed, but the White House fought all the way to the Supreme Court to keep the press and public from learning the whole truth.

Think about it. These secret meetings took place six months before 9/11, two years before Bush and Cheney invaded Iraq. We still don't know what they were about. What we know is that this is the oil industry that's enjoying swollen profits these days. It would be laughable if it weren't so painful to remember that their erstwhile cheerleader for invading Iraq - the press mogul Rupert Murdoch - once said that a successful war there would bring us $20 a barrel of oil. The last time we looked, it was more than $140 a barrel. Where are you, Rupert, when the facts need checking and the predictions are revisited?

At a congressional hearing this week, James Hansen, the NASA climate scientist who exactly twenty years ago alerted Congress and the world to the dangers of global warming, compared the chief executives of Big Oil to the tobacco moguls who denied that nicotine is addictive or that there's a link between smoking and cancer. Hansen, who the administration has tried again and again to silence, said these barons of black gold should be tried for committing crimes against humanity and nature in opposing efforts to deal with global warming.

Perhaps those sweetheart deals in Iraq should be added to his proposed indictments. They have been purchased at a very high price. Four thousand American soldiers dead, tens of thousands permanently wounded for life, hundreds of thousands of dead and crippled Iraqis plus five million displaced, and a cost that will mount into trillions of dollars. The political analyst Kevin Phillips says America has become little more than an "energy protection force," doing anything to gain access to expensive fuel without regard to the lives of others or the earth itself. One thinks again of Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood. His lust for oil came at the price of his son and his soul

[ItsAllAboutMeMan] Plan 9 From Outer Space - 30 Years Later (comic book)

I was googling "plan 9 from outer space:  30 years later" - nobody wanted to talk about the comic books, only sell them.  I found one entertaining thing. Man I was a funny guy back in 2003.

Wha happened?

*****

I wrote

yawn_lemming sent "Tor's tribute to our Pater of Woodism - to the tune of
"The Ballad of John and Yoko."

It's uncanny. Ed Wood spoke of 9 plans from outer space. John Lennon spoke
of 9 revolutions. To me, both are epistles in a living faith. Covers of
Revolution #9 continue to be recorded by artists such as:

Phish
The Shazam
Kurt Hoffman's Band of Weeds
The Durham Ox Singers

Plan Nine has inspired a number of sequels. Notable among them:

Plan 10 From Outer Space
Shakespeare's Plan 12 From Outer Space
Plan 19 From Outer Space
Plan 69 From Outer Space
Plan 9 From Outer Space - 30 Years Later (comic book)

But does our pope view these as canonical, or aprocophal, as early
Christian church leaders found the Gospel of Thomas (for example). Plan 69
is obviously blasphemous, but how about a papal bull on the others?

so that's why I heard them interview you on the CBC - You're Canadian content!

Man, you speak for us all. I was taking care of my elderly parents, so my wife had to make the move to Edmonton alone. My mother died, and my dad could no longer stay at home, so I've joined her here, but I found out that she bought an electric lawnmower when I wasn't here.

It really sucks. All the guys in the neighborhood with their gas lawnmowers look at me with a superior look, the thing is so underpowered it takes twice the normal amount of time to putter around our small yard. But the worst thing about it is dragging the cord all over the lawn, having to make sure I'm not gonna run over it...

A lawnmower got to be free, untethered, you know what I mean? But I can't buy another one, my wife might notice, and she's crowing about how much we're doing for the environment.

If I could just hear you you rappin, "every time that cord catches on a cobblestone, muthafukka, and the goddam thing gets unplugged and I gotta bend over and plug the damn thing in again muthafukka - I'm - get - ting - close - to - the - edge..." I could die a happy man.

thanks in advance,
Matt

[ItsAllAboutMeMan] RE: Dr. J.'s Short Takes: Obama and FDR; Obama a Marxist?; Iran Attack, not | BuzzFlash.org

FDR helped bust up the shanty towns WWI vets were squatting in when they went to Washington DC to get their rights.  He only responded to the Depression because he had to, the idea that people would embrace socialism as a solution to the problems they were facing was in the air.

Roosevelts programs gave temporary aid to many, but it was WWII that lifted the US out of depression, and the US has been on perminent war footing spending ever since.  No Republican or Democrat since then has challenged this economic model (including the inexplicably newly popular Harry Truman, who practiced mass murder on a level Bush can only dream about - so far).

After WWII, the owners and the brokers of labor (Union management) worked together to provide high wages, but no ownership for workers in the US.  It seemed like a reasonable deal as long as industry hummed along - but when US industry faltered, and factories closed, workers found they had nothing.

The New Deal laid the foundation for this, by buying people off with wages instead of offering them ownership.

Obama may have to make significant adjustments, so the comparison to Roosevelt may not be off the mark. However, to call him, or anybody that gets into his position (as the candidate for one of the two wings of the Capitalist Party) a Marxist is so ridiculous (like so much the right wingers say) it doesn't even earn a response.

Dr. J.'s Short Takes: Obama and FDR; Obama a Marxist?; Iran Attack, not

Submitted by BuzzFlash on Tue, 06/24/2008 - 10:55am.

Obama and FDR

Numerous observers and possibly even more numerous wishful thinkers are comparing Barack Obama to Franklin Delano Roosevelt. They do so in the sense that they are hoping that if elected, he will make major changes in American policy (in FDR's context, primarily domestic at the time; in Obama's case, obviously both foreign and domestic.)

Let's just briefly look at the pre-election picture. He had been an Assistant Secretary of the Navy in the Woodrow Wilson Administration and had been the Democratic Vice Presidential candidate in the election of 1920. Nevertheless, before his election as President in 1932, FDR was widely considered to be a rich, dilettante, lightweight who simply felt that he really had to do something to help the American people (and rescue American capital at the same time). He grew in the job, in part because he was pushed by a powerful, broad-based industrial union movement.

Barack Obama is currently widely considered as a very smart, very politically savvy, but very inexperienced candidate who wants to help the American people (and suppress that sector of American capital that, under CheneyBush leadership, is currently attempting to dismantle U.S. Constitutional Democracy and replace it with some form of fascist dictatorship). Let's hope that Obama is elected and then learns on the job as well. And let's hope for the development of the first effective mass movement in the United States since the Congress of Industrial Organizations was born in the depths of the Depression so that some truly progressive changes can be made.

DeLay on Obama: 'Unless He Proves Me Wrong, He Is a Marxist'

On right-winger Mike Gallagher's radio show of June 5, 2008, former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX) declared that Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) is a Marxist. "I have said publicly, and I will again, that unless he proves me wrong, he is a Marxist," DeLay declared. Gallagher chimed in that "old school Marxist, radical liberal failed ideology." Fascinating stuff. Neither of them further defined "Marxism," but since folks from Goldman Sachs (and other major Wall Street firms) to Warren Buffett to right-wing economists from the University of Chicago do too, I guess that we now know what "Marxism" is really all about.

The Republicans: "So What's it All About, Barack?"

The Republicans are working oh ever-so-hard to keep the campaign focus on the personalities, the wives, the process, how "mysterious" Barack is, great speaker and all that, but we "don't really know him." So you see articles such as "What We've Learned About Barack" by someone named Kimberley Strassel (Wall Street Journal, June 6, 2008) in which she says: "many people don't know what Mr. Obama proposes policy-wise" and "Mr. Obama was so good at his message that we still don't know much about the man." These themes are frequently picked up the MSM as well. Now let's see. Obama has published two autobiographical books and his Web site is filled with great deal about his endless list of policy proposals.

For several months now, he has been giving Hillary Clinton-like speeches with laundry lists of proposals (but his sound so much better than hers, because he reads so much better than she does and never sounds as if he is whining). But the Repubs will carry forward with this "we know nothing about him" theme (which will be continually presented by the MSM, not just the Fox "News" Network, in the interests of "balance") right up until Election Day. Why? Because they can't argue on the issues, so they just have to go with this kind of stuff. Ah well. There's the pity.

An Iran Attack?

Just about daily now, we are treated to predictions that BushCheney will bomb Iran, either before or now, courtesy of John Bolton, after the elections. Starting on the Left, we have been treated to such predictions from a variety of sources for over two years now, some with very definite dates given. Over a year ago on these pages (referring to earlier columns of mine on BuzzFlash and The Political Junkies.net), I said I thought the warnings were all false alarms. I still do -- of any attack on Iran, even by the Israeli Right (which will not make a move without the approval of CheneyBush, which would have to back them up).

But I do take the threats and talk of them very seriously -- as a diversion from the one military move the Georgites could conceivably make: an attempted coup here. The U.S. military simply will not countenance an attack on Iran after it has been so seriously weakened by CheneyBush. Except for certain pockets, such as the growing Christian Air Force being graduated in recent years from the Air Force Academy, neither would the U.S. military would support a coup. But CheneyBush would not need them for the latter. In addition to their Christian Air Force, they have their very own Blackshirts, their very own SS-in-the-making: Blackwater, et al. This is the "October Surprise" military threat with which I'm concerned, as are an increasing number of observers elsewhere.

[ItsAllAboutMeMan] The days are just packed

Last night Anne and I tried to watch Return of the Killer Tomatoes.  Our pirated copy stuttered and stuttered and finally stopped entirely.  I went to Amazon and ordered them all. For good measure I went to the official website and joined the fanclub.

Today - visited YouTube to see how my vids are doing. The Waiters performing Watermelon Sugar has reached 423 views... I'm encouraged that people keep coming to it, slow and steady. I'd prefer fast and steady, but it's still better than people not watching.

Pan Tara (a killer song written and recorded with my neice, Tara, age 8, is up to 73 views, it's passing most of the Waiters vids.

The Blood Paradise vids don't seem to be catching on... that comes as no surprise.

So far there have been 20 views of R.I.P. Ringo, my slideshow tour of my gallery on the Ringo photo sharing site, which ends this month. My YouTube subscriber WifeOfMatt gave it 5 stars, and called it "very cute" - obviously a very smart person with excellent taste.

Hey, I just had an idea - you  could watch it too!  http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=B3wexZg41cU

What else?

I went to MySpace and sent about 30 friend invitation to people who self-identify as Matlock fans.  IMHO, Matlock is the only current show worth watching on TV.  I gave TV a try again when I was staying at my folks place to help them out.  I never want to do that again.  But it was fun to discover Matlock, it's good to know they still make shows like that.

Whew, I'm plumb wore out from all this activity.  What's new with you guys?

[ItsAllAboutMeMan] ah, life

I don't know anything about video games or computer games or whatever the hell they call them these days other than what I read in your column.  So I guess I was kind of unprepared when I was on YouTube and I clicked on a vid that supposedly is supposedly related to my masterful music vid, "Don't Antagonize The Scary Man" and I watched a game from the perspective of the player.

The game was called Postal 2, and what it seems to do is allow you to dismember various innocent bystanders (and police) with a variety of weapons.  Fascinated and repelled, I checked out a few related vids.  The makers of the game are equal opportunity - you can kill blacks and women with the same alacrity (knowing words like that seems to keep me out of the new economy) as white people, and many of the gamers who posted their games on YouTube are firmly on the side of affirmative action, chosing blacks and women as their targets almost exclusively.

I never realized what I was missing, and consumed with jealousy towards those who have been in the know about this, and determined to keep this wonderful new secret to myself as much as possible, I flagged every vid I found as violent, repulsive, hateful or abusive tags.

Now I'm sure little or any of what I've said comes as a surprise to you; since you haven't written about it, I want to thank you for not exposing this zesty, hateful entertainment to the ridicule of the the broader world.  Let's just keep it our little secret - let hate fester in the bedrooms of the diseased little minds of the next generation - our best and brightest hope!
