It's no secret that I'm a big believer in hope and change.

But I'm also a big believer in reality. Hope that is not rooted in reality will never lead to the change we desire.

If you don't like things you see, you can't just close your eyes and long for something better. You've got to open them, embrace reality, and channel that hope into action.

America didn't become that shining city on the hill by wishing for it. We built it with clear eyes, righteous ambition, and unwavering determination.

So I'm asking you to recall that unlikely story of America -- a story that forever validates our hope -- and help write its next chapter.

I'm asking you to be neither blind to, nor dismayed by, reality -- but motivated by it.

There is no time to feel discouraged. Now is the time to get organizing with OFA for November's crucial midterms.

Matt, those who believe in democracy and civil rights and a common humanity will always have the upper hand. That's not just something I want to believe; I believe it because history has proven it true.

But history has also proven that virtue alone is not enough. A better vision will only prevail if we work tirelessly on behalf of that vision.

If we want a more representative, more just, more inclusive democracy, we need to keep fighting for it.

If we want policies that lift up the most vulnerable instead of politicians who put them down, we need to keep organizing.

If we want a more perfect union, we need to build it together, from the bottom up.

Say you'll do the work to make this vision a reality:

Thank you,

[ITSALLABOUTMEMAN] Re: Make Music Not War: Stand with Us on September 21st

Thank you for all the good work that you do. I notice from the string of icons across the bottom of your email that you have a presence on Facebook. I hope you will consider establishing a presence also at https://mewe.com/..

Facebook is an evil and stupid organization that has disable my account after 12 years of happy and trouble free participation on my part. I regret the work I did building a world wide network of friends and musicians, and making Facebook a congenial meeting place for them.

They have plenty of other problems, they are being hauled before the US Congress, and I'm shortly going to contact my Senator and advise Facebook be split up or turned into a public utility.  I doubt that I will have much impact, but millions of people are alarmed by their abuses of power (I overheard two people talking about it in line at the Department of Motor Vehicles today).

It is a possibility that Facebook will join MySpace, Friendster, Orkut and others in the social media graveyard. It seems wise to not have all one's eggs in one basket. I was forced out of their basket (not deplorable enough for them I guess) - I don't expect you to leave Facebook on my say so, but it would be great if you would make a second home at MeWe, I've set up residency there, we could be neighbors!

What about the other 364 days?

Today, 2 billion people live in fragile and conflict-affected states. Of these, 1 out of 4 are children. We use our skills and talents to stand with those affected by war, and change the mentality that allows war to continue.

Music helps people affected by war rediscover connection.

Music raises the voices of the unheard.

Music is our collective voice for social justice and peace.

Music is a stepping stone toward lasting social change.

On this day, and every day, join us in opposing war and stand with us for peace - through music.

[ITSALLABOUTMEMAN] Re: Relative Race - Season 5

I don't really get this. the person is supposed to race around and contact 10 relatives?  but it says I'm like a 4th - 6th cousin. I see we supposedly have about 20 4th - 6th cousins in common. None of those names mean anything to me.  What if it turns out we aren't related? how would we even know if we is or we isn't?

How long will he stay in my area?  Will he stay in our house?  Does he like dogs?  Is he allergic to cats?

What if I'm in Seattle or Brazil when he's supposed to meet me? What happens then?

Thank you for your help with my various questions.

Sincerely,

Matt Love,
Cousin At Large

[ITSALLABOUTMEMAN] Guitarist/Vocalist ready to jam with non-weirdos!

Hey Ronnie

if any weirdos, old guys or young guys who aren't ageist assholes contact you by mistake, will you send them my direction?  I'm looking for open-minded fun-loving musicians who don't feel awkward around people who are interested in playing interesting music, not the same old stuff people have been doing the last half century.

https://annarbor.craigslist.org/muc/d/guitarist-vocalist-ready-to/6542323884.html

Hey - I'm Ronnie. I'm a 31 year old guitarist/vocalist in Ann Arbor. I've been playing music since 1994. I've got a ton of gear and have been in and out of bands for years. I'm looking to join up with a group or start something new. I'm down for rhythm / lead guitar, and singing as well. Anything is cool with me!

My influences range from Big Star, The Beatles, and Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers... to Jawbreaker, Dinosaur Jr, and The Replacements.

I'd like to jam with other dudes around my age. Jamming with a bunch of old dudes or young guys would just be awkward. So let's save ourselves from that!

Here's a song from my last band to give you an idea of where I'm at: https://theroaringjuniors.bandcamp.com/track/we-cant-all-be-girls-scouts-millie

Send me an email if you'd like to get together and rock!
  • do NOT contact me with unsolicited services or offers

[ITSALLABOUTMEMAN] Re: Connect with world musicians (and me!) at SXSW

Hey Ron,

It is great you are doing this. I hope you can give a couple minutes of your time to give me some feedback on a project of my own.  I would be very grateful.

Just as many politicians (primarily of the Republican persuasion) continue to fan fears about our friends to the nation's south, other politicians (primarily but not exclusively of the Democratic persuasion) are pushing a New McCarthyism fanning fear of our friends to the East. If previous propaganda wars against people the deciders select as enemies (many of them previously friends or subordinates) such as Noriega, Marcos, Saddam, Gadaffi, et al are any predictor of the future (and what better predictor of the future do we have than the past?) the real war is soon to follow.  These are mad for war against Russia.

My response to Russiagate seems sadly feeble, but it is within my skill set. I want to collaborate with some Russian musicians on some music. I have a project going with some folks in Brazil: https://soundcloud.com/the-waiters-948227981. I met these folks accidently (online, long before social networks), and the ongoing collaboration is friendship-based. I hope my Russian collaborators will become friends, but I hope to go about this with a certain degree of intentionality.

To be part of a real person-to-person citizen's peace initiative.. I am not expressing support or opposition for the Russian government, and not expecting a collaborator to be pro-or-anti Russia or US… I just want to do what I can to ease these stupid tensions with people that are so much like us, and have done nothing against us.

I have this one guy… https://semyon321.bandcamp.com/ he really is a Russian troll! He somehow managed to spam zillions of people with promos for his music. It pissed a lot of people off, but I contacted him. He is apolitical. He says he doesn't believe in governments or the media, he believes in people. I said that should be the first song right there. I don't know much about hip hop though, so I don't know if it's going to go anywhere. I am looking for others, usually 1 out of 100 of these long distance collabs work out for me, a lot of work before the music can even start.

Do you know any Russian musicians? Anybody you can spread the word to, anybody you can send my direction? Any suggestions about where I can go (you want to send me somewhere nice, I hope). I would appreciate it. (also looking for musicians from other places that support the goal, but obviously I need Russians to make it work!). If you would share my project with your subscribers that would be golden, but I don't want to ask for too much.

Sincerely,

Matt

Hi there,

Next week at SXSW I will be leading a session to focus on building bridges within our world music community. While politicians continue to debate the upsides of closing borders to "others," we know that open borders bring people together.

The meetup is on March 15th, 12:30p-1:30p at the Austin Convention Center, Austin Suite.

Get the full details here: schedule.sxsw.com/2018/events/PP71461

And if you won't be there (or even if you will!) be sure to check out our new and improved North American World Music Directory. We really went all out with this one, so please check it out and let me know what you think. ebook.rockpaperscissors.biz/worldmusicdirectory
