[CanYoAssDigIt] Oh my gawd, I can't belief George Hamilton lasted longer than Tia Carrere on "Dancing With the Stars"

White House asks for supplemental $72.4 bln for Iraq, Afghanistan wars
17 Feb 2006 The White House asked the Congress on Thursday for 72.4
billion U.S. dollars in additional funding for military operations in
Iraq and Afghanistan [Halliburton] this year. With the new money, the
cost of the U.S. military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan would
rise to 120 billion dollars for this year, and would bring the total
war-related costs to date to nearly 400 billion dollars since the
Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. The Congress already approved in December last
year 50 billion dollars to cover this year's war costs.

[CanYoAssDigIt] Re: [progressive] Hillary Clinton Immortalized at Wax Museum

Add Hillary Rodham Clinton to the pantheon of luminaries immortalized in Madame Tussauds' wax museum.
A life-size figure of the former first lady-turned-senator was set to be unveiled Thursday, complete with a campaign-style balloon drop, flags and a full-throated rendering of "Hail to the Chief."
A Clinton figure had been on Tussauds' visitor request list for "a long, long time," museum manager Janine DiGioacchino said. But the looming Presidents Day holiday and the buzz surrounding Clinton's possible 2008 presidential bid sped up her addition to the collection.
The Clinton statue, crafted at the original Tussauds museum in London, will take its place in a wing dedicated to presidents and other public figures known as "the gallery." There, the likeness of the Democratic senator will join statues of Presidents Bush, Reagan, Kennedy, and her husband, Bill Clinton.
The new Clinton display will also feature an interactive kiosk, asking visitors to respond to questions including "Would you ever vote for a female president?" and "Will Hillary Clinton be the first female president?"
The museum in Manhattan's Times Square holds 182 figures, including depictions of hip-hop singer Beyonce, Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong and actress Teri Hatcher. Before the Clinton figure, the most recent addition to the Tussauds collection _ a Rockette _ came in December.
Sen. Clinton, who avoids publicly discussing her potential presidential ambitions, had meetings scheduled in Washington and was not expected to attend the unveiling.
"We invited her," DiGioacchino said.

I don't think that anybody ever accused MT of being a slut, but the
"ghoul of Calcutta" is guilty of numerous other, arguably greater
human failings. Anybody convinced of the venerability of MT should
read "The Missionary Position" by Christopher Hitchens, one of his
last great works before he tragically succumbed to alcohol poisoning,
and joined the pro-Bush crowd.

I studied up the book quite a bit, and I've never seen anybody even
attempt to refute his major charges. They say things like "you
shouldn't say bad things about a Saint." It's that kind of thing that
leads to the deification of people like Ronald Reagan, Dubya, Saddam
Hussein, JP II, etc, and I say the hell with it, deal with facts and
let the unsullied claim sainthood.

Here's some comments about the book from Amazon.com. But there's no
substitute for actually reading the book.

Editorial Reviews

What's next--The Girl Scouts: The Untold Story? How could anybody
write a debunking book about Mother Teresa and her Missionaries of
Charity order? Well, in this little cruise missile of a book, Hitchens
quickly establishes that the idea is not without point. After all,
what is Mother Teresa doing hanging out with a dictator's wife in
Haiti and accepting over a million dollars from Charles Keating? The
most riveting material in the book is contained in two letters: one
from Mother Teresa to Judge Lance Ito--then weighing what sentence to
dole out to the convicted Keating--which cited all the work Keating
has done "to help the poor," and another from a Los Angeles deputy
D.A., Paul Turley, back to Mother Teresa that eloquently stated that
rather than working to reduce Keating's sentence, she should return
the money he gave her to its rightful owners, the defrauded
bond-holders. (Significantly, Mother Teresa never replied.) And why do
former missionary workers and visiting doctors consistently observe
that the order's medical practices seem so inadequate, especially
given all the money that comes in? (Hitchens acidly observes that on
the other hand, Mother Teresa herself always manages to receive
world-class medical care.) Hitchens's answer is that Mother Teresa is
first and foremost interested not in providing medical treatment, but
in furthering Catholic doctrine and--quite literally--becoming a
saint. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

I first read a portion of this book in the Washington Post a number of
years ago. As I'd worked closely with Mother Teresa in Calcutta for a
bit over two years, I was amused by it and bought several copies which
I then gave to those I knew who painted halos on her. Now I admit to
some mixed feelings (more on that later) but the book's strength is
still formidable.

While working in an office that provided Mother with much of her food,
a Scottish pharmacologist who'd been volunteering in the Home for
Dying Destitutes visited. She proclaimed that the people she was
taking care of there "don't need to die!" She asserted that most of
the sisters caring for the destitute weren't very bright, and that
there are means of keeping the destitute alive of which the
Missionaries of Charity would not partake. After that, and after
picking up a small child who died in my arms at the mother house not
far from my residence, my eyes were more opened to that saint of
Calcutta.

Incidentally, the child who died was the product of one of the
"natural family planning" sessions the MC sisters held for Muslim
women in Calcutta. That degree of naivete, as if the sisters who lived
among them understood so pathetically little about Islam as to teach
Muslim women of that means of birth control--in one of the most
crowded square miles on planet earth--was enough to make one question
Mother Teresa even if other things, many of which Hitchens points out,
were not.

As for the intellectual level of the sisters, it's important to note
that what I describe is typical in much of the Third World. As an
Indian friend said, most of the sisters, if they had not become nuns,
would have been stuck in their Indian village, in a prearranged
marriage. Their entry into the sisterhood freed them and, in some
cases, allows them to "see the world." I'm not saying that in a
derisive way; were I in their shoes, I may do the same.

And there was one sister whose intelligence and sensitivity did
impress me. She shared with me one day that she was concerned about
children being adopted into families in, say, Denmark, which had
negative population growth at the time. She wondered what would happen
when the fad wore off of the obvious adoptions--brown children among
the more pale Danes--and what social problems might come about as a
consequence. As I'm not familiar with any Scandanavians, I don't know
what may be happening there today.

The situation, though, also has its ironies. I know many a feminist
who is impressed to no end with Mother Teresa, an allegedly strong
woman. As I knew Mother, I guarantee to the feminists that such a
label turns Mother over in her grave. Indeed, while some reviewers
have commented on the MC sisters in the U.S., their commitment to AIDS
patients, etc., I see most of the sisters as sheep, little girls
despite their ages, following their leader, whoever she may be, with a
girl's unquestioning attitude. That's not feminist, despite illusions
to the contrary.

Mind you, I'm not in any way opposed to taking care of the poor. I'm
as far from a Reaganite as one can imagine. But I had--and still
have--close friends who are nuns in other orders in India who do far
more for "human development" than the MCs do. Are they proclaimed
saints? Not in this world they're not. But I don't blame Mother for
that. Rather, I blame the media who are anxious to sell papers by
finding one individual, a sort of Horatio Alger in reverse, who stands
out. Thusly Saint Mother Teresa was born through the likes of Malcolm
Muggeridge whom Hitchens covers mercilessly in his text.

As I have reflected for a number of years on my experience in Calcutta
and the rest of India (MC sisters telling lepers in colonies to be
fruitful and multiply per Catholic teachings, thereby ensuring another
generation of lepers) I've concluded that my biggest objection to the
MC regime is that Mother Teresa unwittingly prevented change.
Politicians, including Reagan, loved her as she said, "write a check
and help the poor, the dying, and help these kids to be adopted." It
never occurred to her that there must be something wrong with a system
which enabled countless people to die miserably. And that extended to
us in the "developed" world. How many people do you know who feel
secure in having their Mother Teresa holy cards, maybe writing a
check, but they'll still act and vote to perpetuate systems in which
so, so many people die destitute.

Oh, the reason I have some mixed feelings toward the MC sisters now is
that I'm still acquainted with some American nuns. Many of them are
close friends, and women for whom I have a great deal of respect and
love. But many too are living more comfortably than I am, e.g., having
their community pay for their homes for which they then pay
substantially less rent than I would pay. At least Mother Teresa and
her sisters DID live and work among the poor.

Anyway, I still recommend the book. It puts much of the media hype,
especially the tourists who'd visited Calcutta for two days, visited
Mother Teresa, then returned to write news stories about how wonderful
she is, into perspective with some of the things Mother REALLY did.

Hitchens' book on Mother Theresa deserves a fair hearing, October 9, 2002
Reviewer: David Thomson "Second Rate Eric Hoffer Imitator" (Houston,

Christian theology teaches that everyone is imperfect and tainted by
Original Sin. All human beings are tempted by the sin of pride and
other vices. Why should Mother Theresa be any different? There are
indeed serious questions that were never adequately answered regarding
the large sums of money at her disposal. Were they spent according to
the wishes of the donors, or was much of it siphoned off to other
endeavors that had little to do with assisting the hopelessly
downtrodden? Did these unfortunates truly receive the best medical
care possible? Is there any truth to the allegations that many of
these patients were denied pain killers to supposedly prepare them
spiritually for life everlasting? Why didn't Mother Theresa comprehend
the cold fact that dictators and convicted criminals were giving her
money stolen from other people? Would trained certified public
accountants have found many abuses and squandering of funds? Alas,
often even well meaning people unwittingly waste the resources under
their direct responsibility. A good heart alone is not enough when
managing a large organization.

It is intellectual dishonest to ignore "The Missionary Position."
Christopher Hitchens is an avowed atheist, but this shouldn't be held
against him. The author's rhetoric is admittedly a bit too aggressive
and borders on the abusive. Nonetheless, Hitchens has presented some
strong evidence that tarnishes the hagiographic memory of the often
described Saint of Calcutta. The man deserves a point by point careful
rebuke and not argumentum ad hominem attacks. This relatively short
book earns a place among all the other works on Mother Theresa....

Christopher Hitchens is the only person of note who actually looked
under Mother Teresa's veil of false piety to find a bean-counter of
sad souls for the cost of continued of human suffering. Hers was a
mission interested in converting the weak of body and/or mind, and on
many occasion against their will or understanding, at the cost of
their lives and proper medical treatment, in order to baptize these
unfortunate souls into Catholicism.
When originally published, this book had an attraction for me because
there had been reports of some uncharitable actions by the Mother over
the number of personal parking spaces she had at her mission.
Christopher Hitchens lent credence to that rumor and demonstrated her
sham was no petty vanity. He daringly investigated the charade of her
missions and saintliness to find an intolerant rigorous parochial who
couldn't have cared less about human suffering on earth where there
were dying souls at hand for the taking.
His work was so compelling that he was invested by John-Paul II to be
the witness against (Devil's Advocate) Mother Teresa in the Vatican
when she was advanced for Canonization.

[CanYoAssDigIt] Re: [ImpeachGeorgeWBush] funny)

I just hate reading this kind of bullshit.  The US government has no interest in speading democracy to the middle east, and never has.  Attempts at representative government in the Middle East have been crushed, first by Britain, later by the US, for the last century, and I'm sure honest scholars of history can find examples before that.

Nobody would believe the crap coming out of the Cato Institute if they weren't so well funded by the people who manufacture the snake oil they sell.

Hey, but at least these shitheads are honest:  " Perhaps the time has come for Washington to adopt a more realistic approach and stop looking for democracy in the Middle East while pursuing a policy that secures the real interests of the Western democracies in the region."

Translated into plain English:  "drop the lofty rhetoric, and let them wallow in poverty while we extract our oil, which God in his mysterious ways decided to locate under their soil."

In " Democracy Not an Export Item," Leon Hadar, a Cato research fellow, writes:  "[T]he U.S. push for democracy in the Middle East has been a self-defeating strategy that has made the region safe for nationalism and other radical forms of ethnic, religious, and tribal movements that regard the U.S. and its allies in the region as the source of all evil. It's difficult for American neoconservatives who fantasize about a global multicultural community committed to liberal democratic values to admit that perhaps the Muslims are not 'like us' after all.

"They laugh, but don't appreciate our sense of humor. They want to be free, but don't share our concept of liberal democracy, a set of values and institutions that can only develop through a long process of trial and error and in a hospitable environment. Perhaps the time has come for Washington to adopt a more realistic approach and stop looking for democracy in the Middle East while pursuing a policy that secures the real interests of the Western democracies in the region."

[CanYoAssDigIt] Cheney

It gets more and more interesting...

Cheney's Chappaquiddick

The Real Story Emerges

By RJ Eskow

The real story is already emerging, if you're willing to do a little digging. Cheney and Whittington went hunting with two women (not their wives), there was some drinking, and Whittington wound up shot. Armstrong didn't see the incident but claimed she had, Cheney refused to be questioned by the Sheriff until the next morning, and a born-again evangelical physician has been downplaying Whittington's injuries since they occurred. Neither the press nor law enforcement seems inclined to investigate.

Published on Wednesday, February 15, 2006 by The Nation
Cheney, "A Beer or Two," and A Gun
by John Nichols

Vice President Dick Cheney, who was forced to leave Yale University because his penchant for late-night beer drinking exceeded his devotion to his studies, and who is one of the small number of Americans who can count two drunk driving busts on his driving record, may have been doing more than hunting quail on the day that he shot a Texas lawyer in the face.

Katherine Armstrong, the wealthy Republican lobbyist who is a member member of the politically-connected family that owns the ranch where Cheney blasted his hunting partner, acknowledged to a reporter for MSNBC that alcohol may have been served at a picnic which was served Saturday afternoon on the dude ranch where Cheney shot Harry Whittington.

According to an MSNBC report that appeared briefly Tuesday on the network's website, Armstrong peddled the line that she did not believe that alcohol played a part in the shooting accident. But, she admitted, "There may be a beer or two in there, but remember not everyone in the party was shooting."

The MSNBC story, which appeared only briefly before the website was scrubbed for reasons not yet explained, has been kept alive by the able web investigators at www.rawstory.com and other progressive blogs. And so it should be, as the prospect that alcohol may have been involved in the Texas incident takes the story in a whole new direction.

By any reasonable measure, Armstrong's attempt to downplay the presence of "a beer or two" raises more questions than it answers about an incident involving a vice president who, like George W. Bush, was a heavy drinker in his youth, but who, unlike Bush, never swore off the bottle.

As with her over-the-top efforts to blame Whittington, the victim, for getting in the way of Cheney's birdshot blast, Armstrong's line on liquor smells a little more like an attempt to cover for the vice president than full disclosure.

This is where the hunting accident "incident" becomes a serious matter. The role played by the Secret Service in preventing questioning of Cheney on the evening of the shooting becomes takes on new significance. If Cheney was in any way impaired at the time of the shooting, it was certainly to the vice president's advantage put off the official investigation until the next morning.

Cheney may be able to say, unequivocally, that he was not in an impaired condition when he shot Whittington. But he does now need to start speaking to this precise issue and to all of the other questions that have been raised -- and, no, it is not enough for the vice president to take a few softballs on Fox News, the administration's house network, as the White House crisis management team arranged for him to do at 2 p.m. ET Wednesday.

When legitimate questions arise regarding the role that the Secret Service might have played in undermining the investigation of a shooting in order to protect the vice president from embarrassment, and possible legal charges, those issues have to be addressed fully and completely. And they must be addressed in a setting where reporters are able to press the notoriously cagey Cheney to actually answer all of the questions that are asked.

Up to now, the whole "hunting-accident" controversy has been little more than a diversion from more serious matters involving Cheney -- not least among these, the investigation into whether the vice president authorized the release of classified information as part of a scheme to discredit critics of the administration's rush to war. But if Cheney used his Secret Service unit to prevent a necessary and proper official inquiry at a time when it might have uncovered relevant information regarding his condition when he shot a man, then the vice president has abused his office in a most serious manner.

The prospect that such an abuse occurred requires Cheney and any White House aides who were involved in "managing" the story -- put Karl Rove at the top of this list -- to stop stonewalling and provide a detailed explanation of their actions in the hours that followed the shooting incident. This is certainly not the only issue on which the vice president needs to come clean, but it is no longer a joking matter -- or, more precisely, it is no longer merely a joking matter.

John Nichols's newest book, " The Rise and Rise of Richard B. Cheney: Unlocking the Mysteries of the Most Powerful Vice President in American History" (The New Press) is described by Publisher's Weekly as "a Fahrenheit 9/11 for Cheney," and Esquire magazine says it "reveals the inner Cheney."

[CanYoAssDigIt] George Harrison fans definately not immune....

1/2 X 18 @ http://www.angelfire.com/musicals/harrison/english/page3.html

"George Harrison was the third man within the most important ever
existing group in the world : The Beatles. Always in the shadow of
Lennon and McCartney, George never had the least vital space for his
creativity to become something really transcendental.

Nevertheless his collaboration to the music of the last century as
well as to his instrument, the guitar, of course, are very
significant. George began playing the guitar when he began to imitate
American rock and country classics like Carl Perkins or Chet Atkins,
which is patent in the solos from eight to twelve beats characteristic
of the first Beatles´ Harrison. '

Afterwards there came the psychodelic years when together with other
two great guitarists, Lennon and McCartney ( if they were not so
technically speaking, their creative facet was great), they explored
the enormous sonancy possibilities of the guitar ( using for the first
time the feedback in one recording or experimenting with analogous
effects )"

[CanYoAssDigIt] The Bush Drools

Bush: "We reject violence as a way to express discontent with what

But his is how he really feels about expressing discontent with what

[CanYoAssDigIt] Wiretaps then and now

At Koretta Scott King's funeral... I heard Carter say this, it was
obvious it was pointed at Bush, but nobody had the guts to point it
out, and since people have stopped thinking for themselves, I wasn't
sure anybody noticed...

Former President Jimmy Carter later swung at Bush as well, not once
but twice. As he talked about the Kings, he said: "It was difficult
for them then personally with the civil liberties of both husband and
wife violated as they became the target of secret government
wiretaps." The crowd cheered as Bush, under fire for a secret
wiretapping program he ordered after the September 11, 2001, terrorist
attacks, again smiled weakly.

Later, Carter said Hurricane Katrina showed that all are not yet equal
in America. Some black leaders have blamed Bush for the poor federal
response, and rapper Kayne West said that Bush "hates" black people.

[CanYoAssDigIt] I don't believe it...

Can anybody confirm this:

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said Monday: "President Washington,
President Lincoln, President Wilson, President Roosevelt have all
authorized electronic surveillance on a far broader scale."

I would believe it if they said Dubya said it, but I can't believe
that the administration is filled with morons. some people have to
know what they are doing to keep the crimes coming

[CanYoAssDigIt] Re: [progressive] Democracy & the Untouchables

This is bunk.  It's well-established that US administrations from George Washington on have great hostility to democracy, particularly in other places. They don't want democratic governments, they want subserviant governments. Elected governments are fine as long as they know their place, but dictators do a better job delivering the goods.

These new governments he mentions, generally speaking, have no hostility towards the American people, though some have expressed hostility towards the current administration - just as we do here on this list, using the same vocabulary.  Democratic standards have deteriorated badly in this country, our elections now somewhat worse than you'd find in Ureguay, for example but he still apparently thinks this is the leading democracy.

Chopra has been in this country too long, he's lost his bearings. He just just have a nice cup of urine and chill out.

Democracy and the Untouchables
by Deepak Chopra

A coca farmer has been elected president in Bolivia and a socialist doctor in Chile. Hamas has won majority power in Palestine and a hard-line anti-Zionist leads Iran. These are all democratic outcomes, and in the foreseeable future we can expect more of the same.

From the American perspective, it looks like the worst example of getting what you wish for. We stand for democracy, and now we have to hold our ground when democracy doesn't turn out remotely as we would want it to. Observers point out that the last five elections in the Middle East have brought in Islamic fundamentalists or close to it, while almost every election in South America has brought in socialists with an animus against the U.S., or close to it.

As the world's leading democracy, it's ironic that we have been so afraid of it elsewhere, supporting reactionary royal families and dictatorships in country after country, although capriciously our support of a Noriega, Saddam Hussein, Duvalier, Aristide, Assad, Musharaf, etc. can suddenly sour. We should welcome democracy for the same reason that India learned to accept the rise of the untouchables to power.

Historically, it was unthinkable that the most despised and dispossessed people in the country should share in its rule. But no horrors have come to pass, and India's democracy has been strengthened. The factions rising to power in South America and the Middle East are similarly dispossessed and despised. Much as we dislike the religious Shiites who are about to rule Iraq, weren't they the same rebels who tried to rise against Saddam in 1991 and were massacred by the thousands when the U.S failed to help them?

Poor, oppressed, ignorant, and rejected people don't behave well; they are often angry and irrational. Whatever anyone may think of them, the dispossessed will only change if they are given a share of power. In Palestine the ruling Fatah party squandered and outright stole billions of dollars in foreign aid, and the leading politicians there have amassed fortunes in Swiss bank accounts while their people starve. The same is true of our favored pols in Iraq. They are prepared to steal billions more as the oil wealth of the country gets divided among the ultra-privileged. In South America a peon class, often made up of indigenous Indians, exists in hopeless degradation while the richest live like colonialists from two centuries ago.

These intolerable injustices aren't ours to fix. Each country deserves self-determination. Billions spent to prop up the Shah of Iran did nothing to prevent the rise of democracy there, and it won't anywhere else, not in the long run. America's choice is either to guide this great historical upheaval or be charged with trying to suppress the very people who might have sailed to the New World when we were struggling to be free.

Deepak Chopra came to the U.S. in 1970 from his native India to practice medicine, a career that evolved into the field of mind-body medicine. His breakthrough book, " Quantum Healing," brought him public recognition in 1989. Since then he has written more than 42 books and travels worldwide as a spiritual speaker who fuses Western science with Eastern wisdom. He lives in La Jolla with his wife, Rita, and has two grown children and two grandchildren. Dr. Chopra heads the Chopra Center in Carlsbad, California, which specializes in many alternative treatment modalities including Ayurveda.

[CanYoAssDigIt] Pepsi Fan Attacked For Wearing Team Jersey

POSTED: 3:52 pm PST February 6, 2006
UPDATED: 5:12 pm PST February 6, 2006
PORT ORCHARD, Wash. -- Police are looking for a man who was wearing a
Coke shirt when he attacked a Pepsi fan outside a Port Orchard
supermarket on Sunday, KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reported.
Police said J.J. Meland was punched because he was wearing a Seattle
Pepsi jersey.
"His team won, (so) he should be happy. Why should he be coming around
and beating people up that are going grocery shopping?" asked Beth
Randle, Meland's girlfiend.
Randle said the attacker first approached the couple as they walked
into the store and he followed Meland, shouting about Coke's win over
Pepsi.
When the couple walked outside, he was waiting for them and followed
them to their car.
"And that's when he just cheap-shotted him right in his face, and he
went down on his knee, and he hit him two more times," Randle said.
Meland suffered multiple fractures of his jaw, which will require surgery.
The attacker, who was seen wearing a Coke's fleece pull-over, ran away.

[CanYoAssDigIt] "Super" Bowl 40

I couldn't avoid the game entirely. A good outcome. Not the blowout I
was hoping for, but a wide enough spread that locals couldn't blame
blame bad calls.

It was priceless seeing the unhappy look on Paul Allen's face. Even
billionaires can't always buy everything they want.

Now Seattle can go back to what they do best - staring at their shoes,
and mumbling about mosquitoes and libidos, and mulattoes and albinos.
