We're in Revelstoke, a pretty damn nice town in the Canadian Rockies. Today we took a dogs for a walk on the Giant Cedars Boardwalk (500 year old trees!)
We encountered a number of people on the way who didn't make eye contact and wouldn't say much beyond "hi" if that. Terrorists? No, tourists... non-english speakers who were just uncomfortable.
Except for one woman. She was taking pictures into the woods. As I went by, she smiled broadly and gestured at the dogs, saying "Do zeez sneezes da burrs?"
"I'm sorry?" I said.
"Do zeez sneezes da burrs?"
"mmm... could you repeat that?
"Do zeez sneezes da burrs?"
I was starting to feel really uncomfortable, I just didn't have any idea what she was saying, but then she pointed to her nose, and said it one more time, and I suddenly realized she was asking me if our dogs sneezed (she meant smelled) the bears in the woods.
"Oh, yes," I said, "they are very alert."
The woods are filthy with black bears and grizzlies, though we didn't see any. I didn't mind.
