[ItsAllAboutMeMan] My 15 seconds of fame

In case anybody just wants to skip to the good part, I've put the part about me in red and italicized it!

By Jessica Ravitz
CNN

(CNN) -- They've sung his praises on social networking pages, calling him a "hero," "the greatest man of our time," "a legend." They've said he deserves to be knighted and should be decorated with medals. They've cried out for his amnesty and have even proposed serving time for him.

A Lebanese student in Beirut attends a December rally to support the shoe-throwing Iraqi journalist.
1 of 2

The man many hundreds of thousands of Facebook users honor is no other than Muntadhar al-Zaidi, the Iraqi journalist who was sentenced Thursday to three years in prison for hurling his shoes at then-U.S. President George W. Bush.

The double-whammy size 10 shoe toss, neither of which hit Bush, took place in December at a news conference in Baghdad, Iraq. In many traditional Middle East circles, throwing shoes at someone is considered a grave insult.

To do this to an American president surrounded by Secret Service agents, no less, was as shocking to riveted viewers who watched the footage later as it was to the president himself.  Watch video about the shoe thrower's sentencing »

"First of all, it's got to be one of the most weird moments of my presidency," Bush said later. "Here I am getting ready to answer questions from the free press in a democratic Iraq, and a guy stands up and throws his shoe. ... I'm not angry with the system. I believe that a free society is emerging, and a free society is necessary for our own security and peace."

Expressing their own freedom on Facebook, a worldwide fan base rose up to laud al-Zaidi's actions. They formed hundreds of fan pages and groups, big and small, serious and light. One is even called the "Shoe-Throwing Appreciation Society."

Mike Trainor, 28, was watching a football game when a news break brought footage of the incident across his TV screen.

"I thought it was the funniest thing I'd ever seen," said Trainor, a Queens, New York, stand-up comedian behind "Guy Who Threw His Shoes at Bush," which has attracted nearly 270,000 fans.

The comedian may have created the post for laughs, but he quickly learned how loaded the issue was.

"It grew into this crazy thing," in which Bush supporters began to weigh in on message boards calling al-Zaidi supporters "a threat to America" and insults in reaction flew, he said. "It shows people have a lot of passionate feelings about it, that's for sure."

One message board on his page, titled "YOU GUYS HATE AMERICA," drew 384 posts in reaction. The creator started it with these words: "seriously you guys are all a**holes. why would you be happy about some freaking foreigner throwing his shoes at the leader of the free world? I don't care if he's dumb he's my president of my wonderful country [sic]."

And interspersed amid the groups of fans were those that spoke out against the al-Zaidi worship. "That shoe thrower is not a hero," attracted 94 members, many of them with Arabic names.

One London poster said the shoe thrower "did nothing but bring shame upon us iraqis [sic]," and another from Halifax, Nova Scotia added, "I dont care about bush but this guy was very disrespectful to the Iraqi Prime minister who was standing right next to him [sic]."

But the shoe-thrower fans, at least in the world of Facebook, seem to far outweigh those who decried his actions.

"This site is intended to express the appreciation of those who share the frustration and anger that you expressed when you blew Mr Bush those boot-kisses [sic]," reads the description on "Thank you Muntadhar al-Zaidi," a nearly 500-member page created by a teacher at the University of Auckland in New Zealand.

Protests of the journalist's arrest and now sentence brought Arab and Muslim demonstrators to the streets. But what Facebook has shown is that al-Zaidi's angry expression resonated with those beyond his religion and region. From England and Uruguay to China and Bush's own red, white and blue, supporters have made noise, at least virtually.

"We're talking about a common man, like me and you," who was "tired of years of lies from a self-called 'freedom saver,' " said Matteo Ferigo of Padova, Italy, the 30-year-old creator behind "Save Muntadhar al-Zaidi," which has 116 members. "I understand that his act was not so civil, polite or 'politically correct,' but I also understand how Iraqi people can see George Bush and what he represents to them."

Ari Vais, the creator of the page, "Free the Iraqi shoe throwing journalist!," said his own history taught him the value of free expression.

"I was born in the Soviet Union, where dissent like this was cracked down on severely," said Vais, a 39-year-old Queens, New York, musician. "We came to America when I was a boy because we knew that people should be free."

What al-Zaidi did was a reflection of the democracy Vais thought Bush intended to spread.

"We were supposed to be liberators, and what America stands for is freedom of self-expression and human rights," he said. "All he did was throw a couple shoes. And he missed! It was political theater and not jail-time stuff."

But it was serious business. Anyone, no matter where they live, would be tackled by Secret Service and face charges for such an attempted assault on the president. And if al-Zaidi had done this to Saddam Hussein, one has to wonder what would have come of the man who's now celebrated.

The shoe throwing, because it was so shocking, proved great fodder for late-night talk shows. Comedians, beyond Trainor, had a field day with this one. It inspired online games for people who wanted to play al-Zaidi.

Matt Love of Edmonton, Alberta, in Canada called the Iraqi journalist's move "an act of great courage" and said that in showing his disdain for Bush, "He spoke for many millions of people."

The 52-year-old retired Washington state department of transportation worker believes everyone can learn from the shoe thrower.

Commenting Thursday on several fan pages, including one calling for a Nobel Peace Prize for al-Zaidi, Love suggested that people turn out for Bush's March 17 speech at the TELUS Convention Centre in Calgary.

"Let's show some solidarity...and lob some loafers," he wrote. "Will the Canadian government lock us up for 3 years? Let's find out."

Reached later in the day, however, he assured CNN that this was written tongue-in-cheek.

"Let me be clear," Love said. "I won't be throwing shoes at anyon
e."

[ItsAllAboutMeMan] Fwd: Gene Simmons Responds

Gene sez: I'M NOT SURE ANYONE READING THIS HAS A CLUE WHAT THE
RHODESIA/LITHUANIA THING MEAN

Well, I got it, I thought it was pretty slick. And by the way, Gene,
could you stop shouting at me?

NO!

JUST BECAUSE I REMEMBER YOUR MOMMY BACKSTAGE AND THEN AT THE HOTEL IS
NO REASON TO BE ENVIOUS OF MY GOOD LOOKS.

This is strikingly like what you said to Brian Stephenson over 30
years ago. I think you could use some new material.

SAYS WHO, BITCH. YOU? AND, WHAT'S THE NAME OF YOUR BAND. AND WHAT'S
YOUR QUALIFICATION FOR SAYING OR DOING ANYTHING?

I was in Dweebish, Gene. And Wimps!

The only response is the faint sound of Gene slinking off, humiliated.

Telma,

I'm cc-ing whoever this Lefsetz guy is.

Post on cover of SIMMONS RECORDS.COM.

And, if you can find a foto of this bozo, put it up there as well.

Before we start this review of my Keynote Speech at CMS from a guy
who's blog was forwarded to me, I'm going to take the liberty of
telling everyone I'm going to comment as we go along.

First, the name LEFSETZ.  I would tell him to his face.  That name's
gotta go.  It blows. If this guy was in a band and wanted to sign with
us, he'd have to change his name. Or, sign with someone else.
Otherwise, have no clue who this fellow is or what he does.
Let's see.....

"Imagine you're stranded on a desert island and you stumble upon a
member of the opposite sex.  You're thrilled!  You're gonna have
someone to talk to, you're gonna make love until the Coast Guard
finally figures out your ship sank and rescues you.

And this person may not be a beauty queen, but hey, he or she is all
right.  At least that's what you think at first.  Maybe you even have
sex and forget your plight for a moment or two.  But then, even though
you're exhausted, your partner just won't give up.  Insists on having
sex every hour, being coddled, all the while telling you how fucking
hot they are.  It would almost be enough to get you to jump back into
the water and swim to your death.

That's what listening to Gene Simmons is like."

THANK YOU.

"He's not a dumb dude."

THANK YOU.

"But it's a full time commercial."

CORRECT.

"And why?  Doesn't he have enough money?"

WELL, RESPECTFULLY, IT'S NOT UP TO THIS AMATEUR TO DETERMINE IF I HAVE
ENOUGH MONEY.  I'LL LET HIM KNOW IF AND WHEN I DO. UNTIL THAT TIME,
IT'S BEST TO PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR OWN MONEY.

"Isn't this like an ex-President buying time on television to give us
his opinion on the budget?  Running for an office he can't be elected
to?  Hey Gene, you were a star once, can you let it go?  Can you stop
trying to convince us that not only is your music great, but that KISS
is the biggest act in the world?"

NO.

"I mean if we really want to get down to it, don't we have to give
credit to Bob Ezrin?"

YES. ALWAYS.

"The producer of "Destroyer", containing the KISS klassics "Detroit
Rock City", "Shout It Out Loud" and the band's biggest hit, "Beth"?
Not only did Ezrin produce those tracks, HE CO-WROTE THEM!  I'm
thinking without Ezrin, KISS is a footnote."

PERHAPS.
OH, I FORGOT TO MENTION, KISS STARTS THE SOUTH AMERICAN LEG OF THE
35TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR AT BUENOS AIRES STADIUM - 90,000 PEOPLE. LET ME
KNOW IF YOU WANT A TICKET.

"Ezrin went on to further greatness, producing one of the biggest
albums of all time, Pink Floyd's "The Wall", as well as the critically
lauded debut of Peter Gabriel.  KISS?  They took the makeup off and
put it back on, reunited with the original members, kicked them out
again and kept dunning us with endless product promotions."

ALL OF THIS IS TRUE. AND YOUR POINT IS..."?

"And that's what this "keynote" address at CMW was.  A product
promotion, for the latest iteration of Simmons Records."

CORRECT.
I HAVE A FIDUCIARY DUTY TO UNIVERSAL MUSIC CANADA AND I HAVE A VESTED
INTEREST IN SIMMONS RECORDS. TO DO OTHERWISE AT CMW, WOULD BE STUPID.
I KNOW HE'S NOT INFERRING I'M STUPID. QUITE THE CONTRARY.

"Just because you're a big musical act, that doesn't mean  you're a
decent executive, that you can run a record company."

SAYS WHO. YOU? AND WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO MAKE THESE ASSESSMENTS.
WHAT'S YOUR QUALIFICATION, IN FACT, FOR SAYING ANYTHING...

"That's like saying a great football coach has to have been a star
quarterback.  They're different skills.  One that Mr. Simmons has yet
to master.  Sure, he made that demo tape with Van Halen, but the band
ended up on WARNER BROTHERS!"

THIS MORON DOESN'T KNOW DETAILS AND BEHAVES AS IF HE DOES. FACT ONE:
AFTER SEEING THE BAND AT THE STARWOOD CLUB IN LA IN 1977, I SIGNED VAN
HALEN TO MY PRODUCTION COMPANY, "MAN OF 1,000 FACES" AND PRODUCED
THEIR 24 TRACK DEMO, 15 SONG DEMO AT ELECTRIC LADY STUDIOS.  KISS WAS
GOING OUT ON TOUR, AND I DIDN'T WANT TO KEEP VAN HALEN TIED UP, SO I
LET THEM SHOP THEIR OWN DEAL, WITHOUT INSISTING I KEEP A SLICE.
WHAT HIS POINT ABOUT ALL THIS, IS BEYOND ME.

"Truly, it was relentless.  Gene with that bizarre hairdo sponsored by Brillo"

NOW, NOW...NO NEED TO BE JEALOUS, BABY.
JUST BECAUSE I REMEMBER YOUR MOMMY BACKSTAGE AND THEN AT THE HOTEL IS
NO REASON TO BE ENVIOUS OF MY GOOD LOOKS.

"maintaining that 360 deals are good for artists and that Canada can
be the new Ireland."

CORRECT. I "DO" BELIEVE CANADA POSSESSES ALL THAT.

"U2 came from Ireland, what does that country possess that Canada does
not?  Isn't that like saying Mutt Lange came from Rhodesia, therefore
Lithuania should be able to produce the best record producer on the
planet?"

NO. NOT REALLY. AND, I'M NOT SURE ANYONE READING THIS HAS A CLUE WHAT
THE RHODESIA/LITHUANIA THING MEANS.

"Really, it didn't have to be 2009, it could have been 1009.  With a
huckster up on stage, trying to convince us to buy from him".

NOPE. NEVER SAID YOU SHOULD BUY FROM ME. DON'T LIE, HONEY.

"Sure, there's salesmanship involved in becoming a successful musical
act, but that's not ninety percent of the equation."

SAYS WHO, BITCH. YOU?  AND, WHAT'S THE NAME OF YOUR BAND. AND WHAT'S
YOUR QUALIFICATION FOR SAYING OR DOING ANYTHING?

"But with KISS, it is!  The music is just the vehicle to make money.
I don't excoriate this, I just don't REVERE IT!"

NO PROBLEM. GO FIND ANOTHER BAND.

"Gene showed a five minute promotional film that was such an assault,
the guy in front of me put his hands over his ears."

I THINK YOU MISUNDERSTOOD.  THAT WAS YOUR GIRLFRIEND. AND YOU WERE
TALKING TOO LOUD.  SHE WANTED TO SEE AND HEAR GENE SIMMONS. NOT YOU.

"Didn't Pete Townshend sing "A Little Is Enough"?  Obviously, Gene's
never heard that track, otherwise he would stop telling us how great
he is and let us come to our own conclusion."

NO. I WON'T STOP TELLING YOU HOW GREAT I AM.  FIND SOMEONE ELSE FOR THAT.

"It was sad."

NO, IT WASN'T.  EVERYONE HAD A GREAT TIME AND EVERYONE ENJOYED THEMSELVES.

"Although Gene paid lip service to the Internet, it was like he wanted
to jet back to the seventies, when the label was king, when record
companies were flush with cash that they'd blow on a bunch of new
acts."

THAT'S TRUE. I WANT RECORD COMPANIES TO BECOME POWERFUL AND FLUSH WITH
MONEY AGAIN. I WANT BANDS TO REALIZE THAT ANY ENTITY THAT GIVES THEM
MONEY (ADVANCES) AND NEVER FORCES THEM TO PAY THE RECORD COMPANY BACK,
WHEN AND IF THEIR RECORD BOMBS (AND THEY ALMOST ALWAYS DO), IS THEIR
BEST FRIEND. I KNOW OF NO OTHER BUSINESS THAT GIVES YOU MONEY AND
NEVER ASKS FOR IT BACK. EVEN YOUR MOM WILL WANT YOU TO PAY BACK HER
LOAN.

"Those days are through.  Shit, imagine trying to get money from
Simmons' company.  That'd be like sucking quarters from a parking
meter.  Gene's notorious for not parting with his own money.  Shit,
I'm stunned he doesn't require new acts to pay HIM to be signed!"

THIS IS A SMALL PERSON, WHO'S NEVER DONE ANYTHING,  NEVER BEEN IN A
BAND AND DOESN'T KNOW HOW THE RECORD INDUSTRY WORKS. HE DOESN'T KNOW
ME AND I DON'T KNOW HIM.  AND HE WOULDN'T KNOW, IN EITHER CASE IF I
"DO" OR "DON'T" PART WITH MY MONEY. AND IN ANY CASE, IT WOULDN'T BE
HIS BUSINESS, OR MY GARBAGE COLLECTOR'S.

"I only went because the last couple of times Gene's spoken he has
said some truly heinous things, blasting the audience, that he told us
today to respect, for stealing his music.  I figured he'd come out
with a few clunkers that would crack you up.

But all I got was a damn advertisement."

THAT'S CORRECT.
I AM ADVERTISING SIMMONS RECORDS. THAT'S WHY I'M UP HERE TALKING ABOUT
IT. THIS GUY IS A GENIUS.
AND I STILL CONSIDER FREE DOWNLOADS AND FILE SHARING STEALING. AND I
WANT YOU TO PAY FOR MUSIC...AND FOR ANYTHING.  IF A BAND WANTS TO GIVE
AWAY THEIR STUFF FOR FREE...I HAVE NO PROBLEM. MY ONLY QUESTION IS,
HOW DOES THE RECORD COMPANY, WHICH PAID GOOD MONEY UP FRONT, GET ITS
MONEY BACK, IF THE MUSIC IS FREE"?

"I know Gene loves that I'm writing this."

SURE. I LOVE ANYONE WHO TALKS ABOUT ME.

"Almost to the point where I considered not writing about his speech
at all.  But I've got to.  Because in order for music to ascend to its
rightful position at the top of popular culture's leader board,"

(I CAN'T WAIT FOR THIS LEADER OF POPULAR CULTURE TO TELL ME HOW TO
POSITION THINGS).

"it's got to be more about its intrinsic value than the sell."

YES, AND NO.  IT "SHOULD" BE ABOUT MUSIC, BUT IT'S ALSO GOT TO BE
ABOUT BUSINESS. IN CASE YOU HAVEN'T NOTICED, IT WAS NEVER JUST CALLED
"MUSIC." IT WAS, AND STILL IS CALLED THE "MUSIC BUSINESS."

"It's got to be more about music than showmanship.  It's got to be
more about creativity than expediency."

NO. HES GOT IT ALMOST RIGHT.  IT'S GOT TO BE ABOUT BOTH.

"KISS had a gimmick.  It's served the band well.  A gimmick can get
you noticed, but soon thereafter it becomes about the music.  KISS
took off its makeup and few cared."

HE'S RIGHT. ABOUT 10 MILLION.

"The Beatles gave up their suits, messed with their hair, even gave up
playing live and the band got bigger and bigger."

I LOVE THE ANALOGY. KISS AND THE BEATLES.  THANKS.

"The problem is, Gene Simmons thinks there's a handbook."

YES. MY HANDBOOK.

"Listening to him is like watching a bad version of "Glengarry Glen Ross"."

NO. NOT REALLY. I DIDN'T LIKE THAT FILM MUCH.  I'M MUCH MORE FASCINATED BY ME.

"It's like going to a training session for Kirby vacuum salesmen.
It's always interesting to hear how another person made it, but if you
want to be successful in the future, you're better off ignoring
everything Gene Simmons has to say."

THIS STATEMENT MADE BY A GUY WHO'S STILL LIVING IN HIS MOTHER'S BASEMENT.

"Unless, of course, you love money more than music."

ACTUALLY, I LOVE BOTH MONEY AND MUSIC.

"But since you're reading this, I doubt that..."

GOOD LUCK TO THIS GUY.
WE LOVE HEARING THE GOOD AND THE BAD.

AND WE HOPE YOU GET OUT OF MOM'S BASEMENT SOON.

[ItsAllAboutMeMan] I just got a call from a CNN reporter...

She saw my posts of Facebook about trying to organize carpools from
Edmonton to Calgary to go "lob some loafers" in Bush's direction when
he speaks to their Chamber of Commerce there.  I wonder if she will
make me out to be a thoughtful concerned citizen or a raving lunatic.
I used the few minutes I had to make several points near and dear to
my heart:

Muntadher al-Zaidi inspired millions with his brave and heroic act

Obama should communicate through back channels to request a pardon
from the Iraqi government for Muntadher al-Zaidi

Obama should make Muntadher al-Zaidi his press secretary

The end of the war in Iraq is phony, and the build up in Afghanistan is bad.

Canada is not the Soviet Socialist Republic of Canada, but it is in
fact the occupied territories

I'm in telepathic communications with the mole men who live inside the
hollow earth.

OK, everything except for the last one.

I wonder if I'll be able to go back and forth across the border freely
after this?

[ItsAllAboutMeMan] Now here's a major Ooga for ya...

A CNN reporter called, she's doing a story about the reactions to
Muntadar al-Zaidi's sentence (3 years in a hell hole for missing - he
probably would have been tortured and executed if he connected).

She saw my Facebook postings, and found me quotable.

My only regret - I didn't get a chance to work Plan 16 From Brazil
(the February 2010 invasion) into the conversation.

Let your listeners know that the hated liberal media gave the crank
expat a forum for his hate-filled rants. well, maybe they did. We'll
see when she files the story if I made the cut.

Darn, I didn't mention ooga chakka either.

[ItsAllAboutMeMan] Re: [progressive] Against shared sacrifice

According to the Wall Street Journal:

Paul Allen, the billionaire co-founder of Microsoft and owner of the Portland Trailblazers basketball team, might save hundreds of millions in
taxes over the next few years, thanks to a provision in the economic stimulus legislation signed by President Obama Tuesday. The
provision is aimed at helping companies who are trying to restructure their debt, by delaying taxes that would otherwise be due when debt-holders agree to forgive a portion of the debt.

***

Matt sez: It is extremely good to know that Paul Allen is going to do well under the Obama administration. Here's more great news for Paul Allen, his own personal public servant is going to be working tirelessly in his interests.  Finally, I can get a good night's sleep.

Gary Locke: A Corporate Champion at Commerce

Our former governor takes to D.C. a record of favors for Boeing and Microsoft.

By Rick Anderson

Published on March 10, 2009 at 9:27pm

President Barack Obama's nomination of former Gov. Gary Locke as U.S. Secretary of Commerce drew wide praise last month from government and industry officials. Senate Commerce chair Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.) said Locke was a "lifelong advocate and champion for American productivity," Boeing cited his "balanced approach to business issues," and Microsoft cheered him as an "enthusiastic advocate" for innovation.

If confirmed as commerce secretary, Locke will become the government's voice of business, promoting trade, investment, and new jobs, along with overseeing the NOAA and the census and patent offices. But will Locke's selection fit voters' concept of the "change" Obama promised in his presidential campaign?

"The interesting tradition about Commerce," says Patrick Dobel, a professor at the University of Washington's Evans School of Public Affairs, "is that, unlike other agencies, the secretary has always been expected to be on the side of business." Locke's track record, says Dobel, seems to match up with that conventional role: friend to corporate America.

As King County Executive and then two-term governor until 2005, Locke at times opened the state's pocketbook to corporations, most memorably helping billionaire Seattle Seahawks owner Paul Allen build a publicly financed football stadium and engineering a $3.2 billion tax break for Boeing to assemble its new 787 jetliner in Everett. Locke also backed a steep reduction in unemployment and injured-worker benefits, particularly those suffering hearing loss, calling it "reform" rather than the coup it was for big business. Since leaving office, Locke has quietly worked in the private sector as an attorney and consultant with Davis Wright Tremaine, a Seattle law and consulting firm. There he has represented some of the same corporations he helped as governor, including Microsoft.

Now he's destined to assist them again as a federal public official—that is, if he doesn't drop out. Locke is Obama's third Commerce nominee in two months. New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson had to withdraw in January after word leaked of an ongoing federal investigation involving his political donors, and the subsequent nominee, Republican Sen. Judd Gregg, withdrew in February due to philosophical differences with the president.

"I'm sure it's not lost on anyone that we've tried this a couple of times," Obama said during Locke's Feb. 25 introduction in Washington, D.C. "But I'm a big believer in keeping at something until you get it right. And Gary is the right man for this job."

Already awaiting Locke, if seated, is a lingering dispute involving Boeing. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers last year asked the Commerce Department to suspend a new program allowing Chinese companies access to sensitive U.S. aerospace technology. The union thinks national security and U.S. jobs are both at risk. In a letter to Commerce, Tom Buffenbarger, international president of the 730,000-member union, said the program "will involve work on the Boeing 787 program that could have been performed by U.S. workers. We find it very difficult to believe that your actions are good for U.S. workers or the U.S. economy."

"We had a good working relationship with Locke as governor," Buffenbarger adds. "But we'll want to sit down with him, as I'm sure Boeing will, if he's confirmed. As long as China continues to manipulate currency while the U.S. looks the other way, we won't have a level playing field for American workers."

Microsoft will likely be on Secretary Locke's agenda as well. Co-founder Bill Gates is a longtime supporter of Locke, having hosted one of his first gubernatorial campaign fundraisers in 1999. As governor, Locke supported tax breaks and signed legislation sought by the company, including tougher laws against software piracy. Today, Microsoft is seeking a similar strengthening of piracy laws in China, one of its biggest markets.

China has long been a forte of Locke, the first Chinese-American U.S. governor. He made repeated trade visits to China during his two gubernatorial terms, earning high marks from a government that values personal relationships, and has since revisited the country as a private consultant with Davis Wright Tremaine. For the past four years, Locke has co-chaired the Seattle firm's China Practice division, and among those Davis Wright has privately represented in China is Microsoft.

Todd Tucker of Public Citizen's Global Trade Watch group in D.C. says they've followed Locke's career and are taking a cautious approach. "I think, especially given his [pro–free trade] record on NAFTA, China trade, and WTO demonstrations [Locke mobilized the National Guard against protestors], all fair-trade advocates will be watching him particularly closely. Obama made a series of commitments to overhaul current trade policies. We're going to be looking for actual results."

The UW's Dobel thinks the 59-year-old Locke can likely skirt any ethical questions arising from his past political and personal affiliations with U.S. corporations. He'll have to fully disclose any financial involvement, and reach an agreement with the Office of Government Ethics on which paths to take if conflicts arise.

"He can recuse himself from the decision-making process," says Dobel, "which is a common occurrence in D.C." Locke, who holds stock in a number of U.S. corporations, including Starbucks and Microsoft, might have to divest those holdings or put them in trust, adds Dobel.

Locke was making the rounds on Capitol Hill last week and did not respond to questions about what services he performed for Microsoft. Locke's former Olympia press secretary and current transition spokesperson, Roger Nyhus, says the governor isn't giving interviews, and Davis Wright Tremaine also chose not to comment. "If confirmed as Commerce Secretary," Nyhus said in an e-mail, "Gov. Locke will carefully and thoroughly follow the ethics rules of both the federal government and the Commerce Department."

According to Davis Wright's Web site, Locke specializes in consulting and overseas lobbying. He handles "governmental relations," aids clients "on a wide range of business, political, and legal issues," and "has demonstrated a remarkable ability to gain access to top Chinese governmental officials." In a 2006 interview with The Seattle Times, Locke said he flew to China five times a year for Davis Wright, and boasted of meeting with China's top banking regulator to help a "large, multi-national company" skirt China banking laws. "I said we'd love to work with you in finding a creative way to achieve your objectives as well as help this company," Locke said in that interview. "If you just go to a midlevel bureaucrat, they're just going to go by the letter of the law and say no, no, no."

His biggest lobbying triumph was persuading Chinese President Hu Jintao to drop in for a 2006 dinner at Bill Gates' Medina mansion. Within days, Microsoft announced plans to spend $3.7 billion over five years on tech purchases and new partnerships in China. Last November, Microsoft said it would be spending another $1 billion in China through 2011 on research and development there.

Also on Locke's China Practice client list are two other firms he boosted as governor: Starbucks and Boeing. Spokesperson Nyhus claims Locke has not done any work for either corporation while at the law firm. But Boeing was one of the stops the Chinese president made here on the trip arranged by Locke, and according to press reports Locke was invited by Starbucks to attend the 2005 opening of its new store at the Great Wall. Starbucks, despite recent cutbacks, plans to expand in Europe and Asia, and is buying coffee from growers in China. And Boeing, which is building a new $21 million parts facility in Tianjin, predicts China will spend $400 billion investing in new airplanes over the next 20 years.

The aerospace giant has been the biggest recipient of Locke's governmental largesse. The $3.2 billion tax break he approved in 2003 was on top of an existing $1 billion in state tax incentives already given to Boeing, and came with another $24 million to hire, train, and pay Boeing 787 workers.

Locke never informed the public that Boeing was effectively calling the shots behind the scenes. The governor had quietly hired Boeing's own consultant and outside auditor, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, to advise him, even though Deloitte had a vested interest in the outcome. WhenSeattle Weekly discovered the $715,000 contract ["Two-Timing Consultant," March 17, 2004], Locke claimed Deloitte's hiring was approved by then–attorney general Chris Gregoire, who denied the allegation. The Deloitte deal was drawn up as a subcontract, and such agreements aren't vetted, a Gregoire spokesperson told SW at the time. Gregoire never openly questioned the ethics of the deal, and shortly thereafter replaced Locke as governor.

In a White House statement about Locke's cabinet nomination, the new administration lauded his Boeing effort. There was no mention of the Deloitte deal or other ethical questions raised during Locke's state tenure, including the favors he did for his brother-in-law's company, which operated the state's Web site ["Clean Harbor?," SW, July 11, 2002].

Kenneth Winston, an ethics expert at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, says he doesn't know enough about Locke to comment directly on his nomination. But "in general," he says, "I applaud Obama's efforts to rid the federal government of some of its corrupt practices. Like other challenges he is taking on, it's a long-term struggle. It won't happen all at once. And in the interim, some people will be selected for office who are not paragons of virtue."

[ItsAllAboutMeMan] Re: fair enough!

Andy Rooney is NOT the stupid fucktard that wrote this stuff:

http://www.snopes.com/politics/soapbox/rooney4.asp

It was some other stupid fucktard.

Yeah, right, if you resent Bill Gates having all those billions, just
step into a time machine, steal all of Xerox's ideas, and then get
your rich and powerful lawyer daddy to sue every honest enterprenier
in the industry out of business. And that was one of the least stupid
thing this stupid fucktard said.

Hey, I feel bad that I'm a stupid fucktard too... I only speak
English, when hundreds of millions of people in the world speak 2 or 3
or more languages. Only fucktards like us asshole Americans would be
proud of being so ignorant.

If you agree with me, forward this to everybody you know. If you don't
- go fuck yourself, tard!
