My response to Russiagate seems sadly feeble, but it is within my skill set. I want to collaborate with some Russian musicians on some music. I have a project going with some folks in Brazil: https://soundcloud.com/the-waiters-948227981. I met these folks accidently (online, long before social networks), and the ongoing collaboration is friendship-based. I hope my Russian collaborators will become friends, but I hope to go about this with a certain degree of intentionality.
To be part of a real person-to-person citizen's peace initiative.. I am not expressing support or opposition for the Russian government, and not expecting a collaborator to be pro-or-anti Russia or US… I just want to do what I can to ease these stupid tensions with people that are so much like us, and have done nothing against us.
I have this one guy… https://semyon321.bandcamp.com/ he really is a Russian troll! He somehow managed to spam zillions of people with promos for his music. It pissed a lot of people off, but I contacted him. He is apolitical. He says he doesn't believe in governments or the media, he believes in people. I said that should be the first song right there. I don't know much about hip hop though, so I don't know if it's going to go anywhere. I am looking for others, usually 1 out of 100 of these long distance collabs work out for me, a lot of work before the music can even start.
Do you know any Russian musicians? Anybody you can spread the word to, anybody you can send my direction? Any suggestions about where I can go (you want to send me somewhere nice, I hope). I would appreciate it. (also looking for musicians from other places that support the goal, but obviously I need Russians to make it work!). If you would share my project with your subscribers that would be golden, but I don't want to ask for too much.
Sincerely,
Matt
Hi there,
Next week at SXSW I will be leading a session to focus on building bridges within our world music community. While politicians continue to debate the upsides of closing borders to "others," we know that open borders bring people together.
The meetup is on March 15th, 12:30p-1:30p at the Austin Convention Center, Austin Suite.
