One time it's OK
To Drop the Ball At 11:59 p.m. on New Year's Eve, a new Waterford Crystal ball will begin its agonizingly slow descent over New York City's Times Square.
It'll be the 101st year of the event, though it was skipped in 1942 and 1943 during a wartime "dim out" in the city.
That first ball in 1907 was made of iron and wood and adorned with 100 25-watt light bulbs; it was 5 feet in diameter and weighed 700 pounds.
This year's ball—twice the size of any predecessor—is 12 feet in diameter and weighs in at 11,875 pounds.
To mark the new millennium in 2000, Waterford's Irish artists designed a completely new version.
This year's ball—themed "Let There Be Joy"—comprises 1,728 new crystals that make up a design featuring an angel welcoming the new year and another 960 crystals recalling last year's "Let There Be Light" design of a radiating starburst.
And with 32,256 Philips Luxeon Rebel LEDs shimmering away, the crystals will generate some 16 million colors and an untold number of kaleidoscopic patterns.
And you thought that box of 96 crayons with the built-in sharpener was a big deal.
