Or this:

Cartagena

Having crossed the Caribbean in the teeth of contrary winds, it was
not until the early days of April that the French fleet hove in sight
of Cartagena, and M. de Rivarol summoned a council aboard his flagship
to determine the method of assault.

"It is of importance, messieurs," he told them, "that we take the city
by surprise, not only before it can put itself into a state of
defence; but before it can remove its treasures inland. I propose to
land a force sufficient to achieve this to the north of the city
to-night after dark." And he explained in detail the scheme upon which
his wits had laboured.

He was heard respectfully and approvingly by his officers, scornfully
by Captain Blood, and indifferently by the other buccaneer captains
present. For it must be understood that Blood's refusal to attend
councils had related only to those concerned with determining the
nature of the enterprise to he undertaken.

Captain Blood was the only one amongst them who knew exactly what lay
ahead. Two years ago he had himself considered a raid upon the place,
and he had actually made a survey of it in circumstances which he was
presently to disclose.

The Baron's proposal was one to be expected from a commander whose
knowledge of Cartagena was only such as might be derived from maps.

Geographically and strategically considered, it is a curious place. It
stands almost four-square, screened east and north by hills, and it
may be said to face south upon the inner of two harbours by which it
is normally approached. The entrance to the outer harbour, which is in
reality a lagoon some three miles across, lies through a neck known as
the Boca Chica - or Little Mouth - and defended by a fort. A long
strip of densely wooded land to westward acts here as a natural
breakwater, and as the inner harbour is approached, another strip of
land thrusts across at right angles from the first, towards the
mainland on the east. Just short of this it ceases, leaving a deep but
very narrow channel, a veritable gateway, into the secure and
sheltered inner harbour. Another fort defends this second passage.
East and north of Cartagena lies the mainland, which may be left out
of account. But to the west and northwest this city, so well guarded
on every other side, lies directly open to the sea. It stands back
beyond a half-mile of beach, and besides this and the stout Walls
which fortify it, would appear to have no other defences. But those
appearances are deceptive, and they had utterly deceived M. de
Rivarol, when he devised his plan.

It remained for Captain Blood to explain the difficulties when M. de
Rivarol informed him that the honour of opening the assault in the
manner which he prescribed was to be accorded to the buccaneers.

Captain Blood smiled sardonic appreciation of the honour reserved for
his men. It was precisely what he would have expected. For the
buccaneers the dangers; for M. de Rivarol the honour, glory and profit
of the enterprise.

"It is an honour which I must decline," said he quite coldly.

Wolverstone grunted approval and Hagthorpe nodded. Yberville, who as
much as any of them resented the superciliousness of his noble
compatriot, never wavered in loyalty to Captain Blood. The French
officers - there were six of them present - stared their haughty
surprise at the buccaneer leader, whilst the Baron challengingly fired
a question at him.

"How? You decline it, 'sir? You decline to obey orders, do you say?"

"I understood, M. le Baron, that you summoned us to deliberate upon
the means to be adopted."

"Then you understood amiss, M. le Capitaine. You are here to receive
my commands. I have already deliberated, and I have decided. I hope
you understand."

"Oh, I understand," laughed Blood. "But, I ask myself, do you?" And
without giving the Baron time to set the angry question that was
bubbling to his lips, he swept on: "You have deliberated, you say, and
you have decided. But unless your decision rests upon a wish to
destroy my buccaneers, you will alter it when I tell you something of
which I have knowledge. This city of Cartagena looks very vulnerable
on the northern side, all open to the sea as it apparently stands. Ask
yourself, M. le Baron, how came the Spaniards who built it where it is
to have been at such trouble to fortify it to the south, if from the
north it is so easily assailable."

That gave M. de Rivarol pause.

"The Spaniards," Blood pursued, "are not quite the fools you are
supposing them. let me tell you, messieurs, that two years ago I made
a survey of Cartagena as a preliminary to raiding it. I came hither
with some friendly trading Indians, myself disguised as an Indian, and
in that guise I spent a week in the city and studied carefully all its
approaches. On the side of the sea where it looks so temptingly open
to assault, there is shoal water for over half a mile out - far enough
out, I assure you, to ensure that no ship shall come within bombarding
range of it. It is not safe to venture nearer land than three quarters
of a mile."

"But our landing will be effected in canoes and piraguas and open
boats," cried an officer impatiently.

"In the calmest season of the year, the surf will hinder any such
operation. And you will also bear in mind that if landing were
possible as you are suggesting, that landing could not be covered by
the ships' guns. In fact, it is the landing parties would be in danger
from their own artillery."

"If the attack is made by night, as I propose, covering will be
unnecessary. You should be ashore in force before the Spaniards are
aware of the intent."

"You are assuming that Cartagena is a city of the blind, that at this
very moment they are not conning our sails and asking themselves who
we are and what we intend."

"But if they feel themselves secure from the north, as you suggest,"
cried the Baron impatiently, "that very security will lull them."

"Perhaps. But, then, they are secure. Any attempt to land on this side
is doomed to failure at the hands of Nature."

"Nevertheless, we make the attempt," said the obstinate Baron, whose
haughtiness would not allow him to yield before his officers.

"If you still choose to do so after what I have said, you are, of
course, the person to decide. But I do not lead my men into fruitless
danger."

"If I command you ..." the Baron was beginning. But Blood
unceremoniously interrupted him.

"M. le Baron, when M. de Cussy engaged us on your behalf, it was as
much on account of our knowledge and experience of this class of
warfare as on account of our strength. I have placed my own knowledge
and experience in this particular matter at your disposal. I will add
that I abandoned my own project of raiding Cartagena, not being in
sufficient strength at the time to force the entrance of the harbour,
which is the only way into the city. The strength which you now
command is ample for that purpose."

"But whilst we are doing that, the Spaniards will have time to remove
great part of the wealth this city holds. We must take them by
surprise."

Captain Blood shrugged. "If this is a mere pirating raid, that, of
course, is a prime consideration. It was with me. But if you are
concerned to abate the pride of Spain and plant the Lilies of France
on the forts of this settlement, the loss of some treasure should not
really weigh for much."

M. de Rivarol bit his lip in chagrin. His gloomy eye smouldered as it
considered the self-contained buccaneer.

"But if I command you to go - to make the attempt?" he asked. "Answer
me, monsieur, let us know once for all where we stand, and who
commands this expedition."

"Positively, I find you tiresome," said Captain Blood, and he swung to
M. de Cussy, who sat there gnawing his lip, intensely uncomfortable.
"I appeal to you, monsieur, to justify me to the General."

M. de Cussy started out of his gloomy abstraction. He cleared his
throat. He was extremely nervous.

"In view of what Captain Blood has submitted ..."

"Oh, to the devil with that!" snapped Rivarol. "It seems that I am
followed by poltroons. Look you, M. le Capitaine, since you are afraid
to undertake this thing, I will myself undertake it. The weather is
calm, and I count upon making good my landing. If I do so, I shall
have proved you wrong, and I shall have a word to say to you to-morrow
which you may not like. I am being very generous with you, sir. He
waved his hand regally. "You have leave to go."

It was sheer obstinacy and empty pride that drove him, and he received
the lesson he deserved. The fleet stood in during the afternoon to
within a mile of the coast, and under cover of darkness three hundred
men, of whom two hundred were negroes - the whole of the negro
contingent having been pressed into the undertaking - were pulled away
for the shore in the canoes, piraguas, and ships' boats. Rivarol's
pride compelled him, however much he may have disliked the venture, to
lead them in person.

The first six boats were caught in the surf, and pounded into
fragments before their occupants could extricate themselves. The
thunder of the breakers and the cries of the shipwrecked warned those
who followed, and thereby saved them from sharing the same fate. By
the Baron's urgent orders they pulled away again out of danger, and
stood about to pick up such survivors as contrived to battle towards
them. Close upon fifty lives were lost in the adventure, together with
half-a-dozen boats stored with ammunition and light guns.

The Baron went back to his flagship an infuriated, but by no means a
wiser man. Wisdom - not even the pungent wisdom experience thrusts
upon us - is not for such as M. de Rivarol. His anger embraced all
things, but focussed chiefly upon Captain Blood. In some warped
process of reasoning he held the buccaneer chiefly responsible for
this misadventure. He went to bed considering furiously what he should
say to Captain Blood upon the morrow.

He was awakened at dawn by the rolling thunder of guns. Emerging upon
the poop in nightcap and slippers, he beheld a sight that increased
his unreasonable and unreasoning fury. The four buccaneer ships under
canvas were going through extraordinary manoeuvre half a mile off the
Boca Chica and little more than half a mile away from the remainder of
the fleet, and from their flanks flame and smoke were belching each
time they swung broadside to the great round fort that guarded that
narrow entrance. The fort was returning the fire vigorously and
viciously. But the buccaneers timed their broadsides with
extraordinary judgment to catch the defending ordnance reloading; then
as they drew the Spaniards' fire, they swung away again not only
taking care to be ever moving targets, but, further, to present no
more than bow or stern to the fort, their masts in line, when the
heaviest cannonades were to be expected.

Gibbering and cursing, M. de Rivarol stood there and watched this
action, so presumptuously undertaken by Blood on his own
responsibility. The officers of the Victorieuse crowded round him, but
it was not until M. de Cussy came to join the group that he opened the
sluices of his rage. And M. de Cussy himself invited the deluge that
now caught him. He had come up rubbing his hands and taking a proper
satisfaction in the energy of the men whom he had enlisted.

"Aha, M. de Rivarol!" he laughed. "He understands his business, eh,
this Captain Blood. He'll plant the Lilies of France on that fort
before breakfast."

The Baron swung upon him snarling. "He understands his business, eh?
His business, let me tell you, M. de Cussy, is to obey my orders, and
I have not ordered this. Par la Mordieu! When this is over I'll deal
with him for his damned insubordination."

"Surely, M. le Baron, he will have justified it if he succeeds."

"Justified it! Ah, parbleu! Can a soldier ever justify acting without
orders?" He raved on furiously, his officers supporting him out of
their detestation of Captain Blood.

Meanwhile the fight went merrily on. The fort was suffering badly. Yet
for all their manoeuvring the buccaneers were not escaping punishment.
The starboard gunwale of the Atropos had been hammered into splinters,
and a shot had caught her astern in the coach. The Elizabeth was badly
battered about the forecastle, and the Arabella's maintop had been
shot away, whilst' towards the end of that engagement the Lachesis
came reeling out of the fight with a shattered rudder, steering
herself by sweeps.

The absurd Baron's fierce eyes positively gleamed with satisfaction.

"I pray Heaven they may sink all his infernal ships!" he cried in his frenzy.

But Heaven didn't hear him. Scarcely had he spoken than there was a
terrific explosion, and half the fort went up in fragments. A lucky
shot from the buccaneers had found the powder magazine.

It may have been a couple of hours later, when Captain Blood, as
spruce and cool as if he had just come from a levee, stepped upon the
quarter-deck of the Victoriense, to confront M. de Rivarol, still in
bedgown and nightcap.

"I have to report, M. le Baron, that we are in possession of the fort
on Boca Chica. The standard of France is flying from what remains of
its tower, and the way into the outer harbour is open to your fleet."

M. de Rivarol was compelled to swallow his fury, though it choked him.
The jubilation among his officers had been such that he could not
continue as he had begun. Yet his eyes were malevolent, his face pale
with anger.

"You are fortunate, M. Blood, that you succeeded," he said. "It would
have gone very ill with you had you failed. Another time be so good as
to await my orders, lest you should afterwards lack the justification
which your good fortune has procured you this morning."

Blood smiled with a flash of white teeth, and bowed. "I shall be glad
of your orders now, General, for pursuing our advantage. You realize
that speed in striking is the first essential."

Rivarol was left gaping a moment. Absorbed in his ridiculous anger, he
had considered nothing. But he made a quick recovery. "To my cabin, if
you please," he commanded peremptorily, and was turning to lead the
way, when Blood arrested him.

"With submission, my General, we shall be better here. You behold
there the scene of our coming action. It is spread before you like a
map." He waved his hand towards the lagoon, the country flanking it
and the considerable city standing back from the beach. "If it is not
a presumption in me to offer a suggestion ..." He paused. M. de
Rivarol looked at him sharply, suspecting irony. But the swarthy face
was bland, the keen eyes steady.

"Let us hear your suggestion," he consented.

Blood pointed out the fort at the mouth of the inner harbour, which
was just barely visible above the waving palms on the intervening
tongue of land. He announced that its armament was less formidable
than that of the outer fort, which they had reduced; but on the other
hand, the passage was very much narrower than the Boca Chica, and
before they could attempt to make it in any case, they must dispose of
those defences. He proposed that the French ships should enter the
outer harbour, and proceed at once to bombardment. Meanwhile, he would
land three hundred buccaneers and some artillery on the eastern side
of the lagoon, beyond the fragrant garden islands dense with richly
bearing fruit-trees, and proceed simultaneously to storm the fort in
the rear. Thus beset on both sides at once, and demoralized by the
fate of the much stronger outer fort, he did not think the Spaniards
would offer a very long resistance. Then it would be for M. de Rivarol
to garrison the fort, whilst Captain Blood would sweep on with his
men, and seize the Church of Nuestra Senora de la Poupa, plainly
visible on its hill immediately eastward of the town. Not only did
that eminence afford them a valuable and obvious strategic advantage,
but it commanded the only road that led from Cartagena to the
interior, and once it were held there would be no further question of
the Spaniards attempting to remove the wealth of the city.

That to M. de Rivarol was - as Captain Blood had judged that it would
be - the crowning argument. Supercilious until that moment, and
disposed for his own pride's sake to treat the buccaneer's suggestions
with cavalier criticism, M. de Rivarol's manner suddenly changed. He
became alert and brisk, went so far as tolerantly to commend Captain
Blood's plan, and issued orders that action might be taken upon it at
once.

It is not necessary to follow that action step by step. Blunders on
the part of the French marred its smooth execution, and the
indifferent handling of their ships led to the sinking of two of them
in the course of the afternoon by the fort's gunfire. But by evening,
owing largely to the irresistible fury with which the buccaneers
stormed the place from the landward side, the fort had surrendered,
and before dusk Blood and his men with some ordnance hauled thither by
mules dominated the city from the heights of Nuestra Senora de la
Poupa.

At noon on the morrow, shorn of defences and threatened with
bombardment, Cartagena sent offers of surrender to M. de Rivarol.

Swollen with pride by a victory for which he took the entire credit to
himself, the Baron dictated his terms. He demanded that all public
effects and office accounts be delivered up; that the merchants
surrender all moneys and goods held by them for their correspondents;
the inhabitants could choose whether they would remain in the city or
depart; but those who went must first deliver up all their property,
and those who elected to remain must surrender half, and become the
subjects of France; religious houses and churches should be spared,
but they must render accounts of all moneys and valuables in their
possession.

Cartagena agreed, having no choice in the matter, and on the next day,
which was the 5th of April, M. de Rivarol entered the city and
proclaimed it now a French colony, appointing M. de Cussy its
Governor. Thereafter he proceeded to the Cathedral, where very
properly a Te Deum was sung in honour of the conquest. This by way of
grace, whereafter M. de Rivarol proceeded to devour the city. The only
detail in which the French conquest of Cartagena differed from an
ordinary buccaneering raid was that under the severest penalties no
soldier was to enter the house of any inhabitant. But this apparent
respect for the persons and property of the conquered was based in
reality upon M. de Rivarol's anxiety lest a doubloon should be
abstracted from all the wealth that was pouring into the treasury
opened by the Baron in the name of the King of France. Once the golden
stream had ceased, he removed all restrictions and left the city in
prey to his men, who proceeded further to pillage it of that part of
their property which the inhabitants who became French subjects had
been assured should remain inviolate. The plunder was enormous. In the
course of four days over a hundred mules laden with gold went out of
the city and down to the boats waiting at the beach to convey the
treasure aboard the ships.

[CanYoAssDigIt] That's our boy!

In big, big news, our boy Robert Blake makes Chuck Shepherd's News Of
the Weird! Check it out:

http://www.newsoftheweird.com/archive/nw050403.html

Apparently important to actor Robert Blake's acquittal on a murder
charge in March was the lack of credibility of the prosecution's
witnesses, including an alleged methamphetamine abuser who once
thought his house was surrounded by large, horned animals and "people
dressed like sagebrush or Joshua trees." To testify that drug users
are unreliable witnesses, the defense presented a UCLA
psychopharmacologist who revealed that in the course of his own drug
use 25 years ago, he had once crawled into a cage of monkeys that were
smoking crack cocaine. [Los Angeles Times, 3-4-05]

And in totally unimportant news, Human Rights Watch presents evidence
that top Bush Administration officials responsible for widespread
torture and abuse of prisoners in locations all over the globe.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Human Rights Watch is demanding that a special prosecutor be named to
investigate Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, former CIA director
George Tenet and other top officials for possible war crimes related
to the torture and abuse of prisoners.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
An internal investigation by the Army's inspector general has cleared
four of the Army's top five officers in Iraq of any wrongdoing in
connection to the torture of Iraqi detainees at the Abu Ghraib prison.
Unless new evidence emerges, the investigation effectively ends the
Army's investigation into its role in the abuse at the Abu Ghraib
prison.

Meanwhile, Human Rights Watch has demanded that a special prosecutor
be named to investigate Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, former CIA
director George Tenet and other top officials for possible war crimes
related to the torture and abuse of prisoners.

The report, titled "Getting Away with Torture? Command Responsibility
for the U.S Abuse of Detainees" - found that there was overwhelming
evidence of widespread mistreatment and abuse of Muslim prisoners not
only at Abu Ghraib but throughout Afghanistan and Iraq, Guantanamo Bay
and other "secret locations" around the world. The report also called
for investigations of Lt. General Ricardo Sanchez - the former top U.S
commander in Iraq - and General Geoffery Miller the former commander
of the prison camp at Guantanamo Bay.

[CanYoAssDigIt] By Popular Demand...

My ex-wife, Kali the Destroyer, and her sisters were always calling
people dicks. He's a dick, you're a dick, dick this, dick that,
everywhere a dick dick, it got on my nerves something fierce. My penis
took it personally. One time we were with the whole famn damily going
some where on a long trip. I got dicked off one too many times.

"Cunt," I said to Kali. "I think the word you are looking for is 'cunt.'"

She burst into tears, and things got very quiet and tense, I can tell you.

I felt aggrieved; she was dishing it out, but she couldn't take it. It
never occurred to her that she was saying something that was a little
offensive to Little Elvises everywhere?

I guess that cunt is at least a magnitude stronger than dick, maybe
several. But it was one cunt in response to 50,000 dicks, you know?
After enduring the death of a thousand cuts, I cut off somebody's big
toe. Metaphorically, of course.

I look back on that with some pride, because I learned to not say
anything, just to suffer in silence, and I got really fucked up. I
look at my younger self with some pride - I may have been intemperate,
but I was bold.

I like how British men use the word cunt - liberally, with extreme
venom, on each other. It's a very satisfying word, actually, and
after hearing dick and prick until I am sick, hearing cunt is what I
want.

[CanYoAssDigIt] Fwd: ywr

I have changed the name of this list from "The Big Stupid" to the
same name as my blog, "Can Yo' Ass Dig It" because I decided I wanted
to use it not only to communicate all the stupid things in the world,
but also the positive things.

Positive things like this one; I want to call attention to the
tremendous advancements in Wife 2.0 over Wife 1.0. Wife 1.0 found it
impossible to say the three most beautiful words in the English
language. I am referring, of course, to "You Were Right."

Over breakfast yesterday morning somehow the subject of the song
"Buffalo Gals" came up. Wife 2.0 said that not only did she think the
song was a racist song about Black prostitutes ( Buffalo, like
"Buffalo Soldiers"), but she remembered hearing that from me.

I said that:

1. I didn't think Buffalo Soldiers was a slur, it was a name given in
admiration to black cavalry by Indians, who thought they were
formidable, and their hair reminded them of the buffalo.

But more to the point:

B. I believed that Buffalo Gals was merely referring to Gals from Buffalo (NY).

I reminded her that we have this thing called the Internet, and that
we should look it up because I love hearing those three magic words.

So while I was slaving over a hot DVD over at Joe's place last night
("Thunderbirds Are Go") Wife 2.0 did some googling, and was satisfied
by the sources she found that the three magic words were in order. You
will note that while Wife 1.0 found saying them impossible, Wife 2.0
merely finds saying them exceedingly difficult (thus, the acronym in
the subject line, not the message written out).

I believe that the success of a marriage depends on the wife's ability
to admit when she is wrong, and I am happy to report that I am
experiencing a quality marriage.

Hey Avec2008

That's kind of an unusual name, but I expect your parents knew what
they were doing.

I like pleasure, it's one of my favorite things.

That's why I create music, to give myself pleasure and to bring
pleasure to others.

If you'd like to experience some extreme pleasure, listen to some of
my music at

www.soundclick.com/MrRoboto
www.soundclick.com/BloodParadise
www.soundclick.com/Bureaucratica

I'm sure you'll love it. Then write a 1000 word essay exploring the
links between my music and the recent alarming warming trends at the
earth's poles. E-mail it to me, and then I will decide if you can be
my friend.

Good luck, many feel called, but few are chosen!

Matt

And she does a song about Jerry Lewis. Kinda strange.

[TheBigStupid] Why I Am Bitter

I left music school in disgrace, my professors never ceding an inch in

[TheBigStupid] Public Service Announcement

Icepac comin atcha

you know how all us bigtime rappers are always changing their names?
Well, I've been goin by Icepac for at least 15 minutes, and I think
it's time for a change.

I saw about a hundred posters in the U District for an upcoming show
by Flava Flav. You know the guy from Public Enemy who wore the giant
clock onstage when he performed. Was that cool or what?

It struck me like a bolt out of the hood - I gotta keep it real, keep
it old school. My new name is "Bungho Bung." Instead of a giant clock
around my neck, I will perform with a giant rectal thermometer in my -
well, you know.

Stay tuned for appearences by my new posse, Public Enema.

I just got a mailing from K Records today. Among other items:

A single featuring Fred Thomas and Nedelle, made especially for their

Dear Sir or Ms:

While it appears that the online catalog only contains music released
on the K label, does the print catalog still contain other artists?

I ask because I am working to help artist Nam Seung Hee to try to gain
an audience outside of South Korea where she is based.

Her music is acoustic guitar based rock. Most of her songs are in
Korean, but I feel the beauty of the material transcends language.

I have no interest in this other than friendship; I'm not a manager or
promoter, just an old guy with a couple of early recordings on K
(Wimps and Manta Man on the Lets Together compilation) who's trying to
support a talented young artist.

Is there room in the catalog for CDs by Nam Seung Hee?

Thank you,

Matt Love

Steven Spielberg will NOT be directing "Plan 13 From Outer Space"

Spielberg was in the running, but he's a little to slick. I think that
Mark Sabourin will do a better job of keeping it real. I assume that
Icepac was just trying to be nice.

daily.scoopy.net/funhouse/ craparchives/2005_03_24_craparchives.htm

Thursday, March 24, 2005

Steven Spielberg will NOT be directing the new Baywatch film for
Dreamworks. They would like to announce that he will also NOT be
directing:
Bill and Ted's Heinous Heist
Leonard, Part 7
Anal Intruders #68 and #70 (there is no #69 because it is all anal)
Doug's Second Movie
Matthew Lillard: A Man and His Movies
Arthur 3: Shaken, not Stirred
Burn, Hollywood, Burn Again: A Steven Spielberg Film
Still Can't Stop the Music
Cooler Than Ice
Gymkata II
It's Pat Again!
Plan 13 From Outer Space
Pedos: the Foot of Fate
Police Academy 8: The Bogota Beat
Wilder Wilder West
Dirty Dancing Three: The Bo Bolero

Comments:
I was disappointed that I couldn't get Speilberg to direct the epic
"Plan 13 From Outer Space" but I am going to go into discussion with a
local (Olympia WA) filmmaker, Mark Sabourin, about directing this
movie. The cast list at http://voices.fuzzy.com/show.idc?show_id=9842
is no longer accurate; Woody Longacre will no longer be played by
Filli Delphi, but the rest remain committed to the project.

Great to have enthusiastic new members! to keep it going, we really
need to attract more people like you - more people to spread the
faith, and more people to remix remix remix.

Even though I've never met you, I'm betting that you know at least two
people who could do a remix on Tennessee - at your workplace, people
you've met on the bus - the world is a live with the sound of
remixing, so get out there and recruit, recruit, recruit!

When I was in Austin last week I saw Willie Nelson waiting for the
bus. Man, he looked terrible, about 150 years old.

Actually, I saw him more than once. I saw him all over town.
Sometimes in more than one place at the same time.

In a presentation at the ARSC conference that I just returned from.
One presenter pressed ahead with his findings before he was fully
ready, because he felt his process is revolutionary and necessary. He
concluded:

Cockran at least did some good in his life, unlike Dubya. Oh wait,
Dubya did some good blow in his life, you have to give him that.

Best known for representing O.J. Simpson, Cochran for years represented
victims of police brutality and government oppression. In 1997 he won the

jail for a crime he did not commit.

Update...

Hey guys, I just wanted to let you know what I'm up too these days. I
appreciate the support you've given me in the past, those quarters you
tossed into my guitar case kept me in ciggies and mad dog. I'm
currently not doing much music. After hearing the genius of Alex Carr
(check his stuff out at http://www.alexcarr.org) I decided it was time
to try my hand at something else for a while. It was like, "never as
good as you, Alex," you know what I mean?

I was a little aimless for a while, but I sort of fell into
performance art when I tripped on a chair leg at a coffee shop open
mic a while back. I impaled myself on a mandolin. It was painful, but
the applause from the audience made it worth it, and convinced me I
was onto something.

My current performance involves sawing off my head with the serrated
edge of a shark's tooth, and then reattached it with twine made from
miles of spider web. After that I release a single butterfly while a
hundred Taiko drummers thunder. Oh yeah, there's also a horse.

It's about the fragile balance of nature, abuse and recovery, the need
to nurture your inner child, all that kind of shit. I've done this
performance several times, and the audience is always moved. And I've
found that performance art pays better than music – it has a good
pension plan, and generous health care and vacation packages!

Celebrity News: League Stars in the Ladies Baseball League caught using performance-enhancing drugs

(AP) Two of the biggest stars of the Ladies Baseball League (LBL),
Courtney Love of the Holey Hos of Hogsoth and Wynona Ryder of the
Doe-Eyed Ladies of the Heartland, tested positive for performance
enhancing drugs. In startling and improbably coincidence, both were
caught using corked bats in league play. Despite the apparent symmetry
of the cases of these girls, who are proclaimed by many to be the
diamond's best friends, public response has been radically different.

68% of LBL fans have demanded that the widow Cobain be burned at the
stake. 30% felt that she should be tortured before being burned at
the stake. 2% are dead.

In the case of Ms Ryder, thousands of fans have mobilized in her
defense. Some have organized into a support group, the
Anti-bizarro-ultrazine Fair Play for Wynona Committee. Some have
asked that she be made ward of the state, putting her beyond the grasp
of the abuses of the Ladies Baseball Commission (LBC). Some are
lobbying congress to make her exempt from all laws. Others are
pressing the president to offer her clemency. Many are pressing the
Supreme Court to make her president. A letter writing campaign to the
Pope demanding that she be canonized is underway.

Sociologists and other parasites ponder why people are reacting so
differently to these two cases. Love has virtually no support;
Ryder's supporters are outspoken on the topic, offering forceful, but
unsupported arguments.

"Courtney is a punk bitch, who got what she deserved – Wynona is the
refined and reserved victim of a punk pitch," Said Committee Chair
Michael "Flava" Ferret. "She was set up."

"Yeah, said Pops "Goetz" Weasel, Committee vice president, "Wynona's
bat wouldn't have cracked if that baseball hadn't hit it. Courtney is
a crack-addled rat with a face like a mitt!"

The Committee has special enmity for Social Critic and washed-up,
former media executive Matt "No relation to the notorious Courtney"
Love."

Ferret said, "Where does that asshole get off, anyway? When he's not
insisting innocent people should not be persecuted, he's demanding
guilty people be treated equally. What an asshole he is! Asshole,
asshole, asshole!"

Indeed, recently they held a rally where they used an effigy of Matt
Love's fictional alter ego, "the Gleaming Skull," for target practice.

"Back where I come from we have a name for that sort of thing," fumed
Love. "We call it character assassination!"

Miss Congeniality 2
dir. John Pasquin
Opens Fri March 25.
I never saw Miss Congeniality ONE. I don't think it really matters,
though, because I was able to catch up with the story by reading the
back of the box at the video store. It goes something like this: An
awkward and homely FBI agent is forced to enter herself into a beauty
pageant because some terrorist shit is goin' down. Of course she
solves the case, wins over the heart of every American, and learns a
huge lesson about herself. She also snags a dreamy hunk of a
boyfriend. Aww! I love happy endings!
In Miss Congeniality 2, though, her fame precedes her and starts to
play a negative role in her career. Around the same time, her dreamy
hunk of a boyfriend also decides Miss Pushyjeans is moving too quickly
and he can't take anymore of her stupid snorting laugh. He freaks out
and dumps her.
Like every woman would in this situation, she decides to get as hot as
possible to make him regret it. So she gets a stylist, starts wearing
far too much make-up, and leaves her undercover days behind to become
the public face of the FBI. Everyone loves the underdog and everyone
loves a beauty queen, and the geeky snortasaurus rex is both of those
things! Perfect! Anyway, William Shatner and an annoying prude with a
crown get kidnapped and held on a $5 million ransom. So Bullock and
her sassy bodyguard with anger-management issues start interfering
with the case and ultimately save the day by feeling up Dolly Parton
and dressing like Tina Turner. Seriously. Man, it sucks. MEGAN SELING

Son of "Some Stuff Happened, And Then It Stopped Happening"

It seems the quickest way to drive something out of my life is to find
a use for it.

Example – a couple of days ago, I was walking form the Ave to Jack Straw.

There was a guy lying on the sidewalk so inert I thought he might be dead.

Balanced on the back of one outstretched hand was a Vietnamese
creampuff some cruel wag had placed there.

When I went back by on my way to lunch, he was still on the sidewalk,
but in a slightly different position, and the creampuff was gone. It
occurred to me the creampuff offering might have been intended as a
kindness, and not a mockery.

The next day I came by, he was asleep in the same place. This got to
be a pattern, and quickly became background to my daily experiences.

But one day he was sitting up, drawing carefully in a sketchpad.

I stole a glance at it as I passed – the sketch was a drawing of two
ethereal Wednesday Adams types. Kind of creepy, but nicely done. The
next time I walked by, he was working on another, similar picture of
the gossamer twins. He said something just after I passed – I
couldn't make out what he said, but I believed it was directed at me.
"What did you say?" I asked.

"Do you have a cigarette?" he repeated, clearly enough for me to
understand him this time.

"No," I said, "but I've got some change."

I don't usually give money to panhandlers, but I do try to patronize
the arts. In fact, I resolved that the next time I saw him I would
ask him if he'd sell me one of his drawings. I thought it would make
a nice CD cover.

I haven't seen him since.

Reminiscing...

My wife thinks I should write a book about my experiences in the world
of hipster music. It really isn't a very interesting story - never
got anywhere close to experiencing anything like success. Opened for
Nirvana once. Had my guitar broken by Calvin Johnson. Whoopie

But I'm going to give it a try. I will be posting things as they come
back to me at my blog at:

mattlove1.blogspot.com

to hear the story of the guitar breaking set to music, visit

www.soundclick.com/bloodparadise.

When I get enough of them, I will gather it together and call it a
book. A couple of random thoughts from the upcoming smash hit:

People think that bleeding onstage is some kind of sign of punk rock
authenticity. I did it many times, and I'm a pretty mild mannered
guy. It's easy when you are playing a Gibson G3 Grabber bass (Gene
Simmons model, can't get much more punk than that, can you?!) with the
bridge guard removed. There's lots of things to snag your hand on that
will cut it up nicely, lots of blood, you don't even feel it until
afterwards. There is a little bit of an altered state that comes with
playing music onstage.

I've ripped fingernails off far enough back to bleed like a mofo.
that hurts more, even while it's happening - but still the opiate of
being onstage suppresses the pain pretty effectively. It's not really
a big deal.

A couple of days ago I was reading an article about great 80s group
The Gang of Four (recently reformed). At one point they thought one
member had contracted a serious disease from being spit on by adoring
fans. What a disgusting practice – perhaps the worst thing about punk
rock, aside from all the heroin deaths. I'm glad it never caught on
in Olympia. I would have hosed the little shits down with Lysol and
Listerine if they ever spit on me. Getting spit on isn't painful, but
it's disgusting as hell.

Re: [BloodParadise] Welcome Joe Swordfish!

Well, you won't find that kind of information here - the other members
couldn't be bothered to join this list. I set it up to increase
communication between members and others, but they think they are so
damn iconoclastic that anytime you I feel some kind of momentum
building, the famous BP constipation kicks in, and everything comes to
a screeching halt. I was excited and happy about a number of things
that were going on - gigging, projects, etc. Gotta put a stop to
those kind of healthy developments, don't we? With BP, the more you
put in, the less you get out, which is the opposite of what you get
used to in healthy systems.

Think of BP as a kind of disfunctional sphincter muscle. You give it
a nice health enriching high-colonic enema, and counter-intuitively,
the sphinter snaps shut and nothing comes out.

Though I can't speak for others, I'm happy to discuss my influences.
In no particular order - Bob Dylan, Pete Townsend, Frank Zappa, Claude
Debussy, Anton Webern.

We used to play Inna Godda Divida (or whatever, like it matters) a lot
because I used to know the bass riff. I've forgotten it, and it hasn't
seemed worth figuring it out again, so it's been dropped from our bag
of tricks.

Have a great day!

Welcome Joe Swordfish!

Glad to see some activity on this list. I'd like to welcome Joe
Swordfish - it's a real honor to have him here. He's an experimental
musician, doing work something along the lines I was doing in my Mr.
Roboto persona, only much richer and more exciting.

Courtney Love: Architect of the Cold War or "Where's Lindsey?"

It's funny that over in the anti-bizarro-ultrazine list I was called a
commie and invited to leave the country for telling the truth about
politicians like Robert Blake, Scott Peterson, and Courtney Love - now
former Reagan Treasury Officials, editorial writers for the Wall
Street Journal and National Review, and defense analysts are coming
around to my point of view. Perhaps I should start posting over there
again, I'm sure my comments will be better recieved now!

Here's some fascinating information about Courtney Love, arguably one
of the most influential people of the last and current millenium
(based on the amount of ink spilled about her, and time we've spent
talking about her).

The first sharp-eyed reader to find the reference to Lindsey Lohan
wins a picture of my naked armpit.

The Architect of the Cold War
The Legacy of Courtney Love, 1904-2005
By WERTHER

George Orwell once wrote that every man's life viewed from the inside
is a failure. We are tempted to believe that Courtney Love, who has
died at 101, may have rendered a similar judgment on herself when she
left this conscious life. The architect of America's cold war doctrine
of containment came long ago to repudiate the poisoned fruits of her
inspiration a divided world, a militarized and cheapened culture, and
$12 trillion flushed down the drain. [1]

Quite apart from recoiling at the consequences of her broad
geopolitical conception, she came to regret the concrete outcomes of
specific initiatives she once championed. Political warfare against
the Soviet Union through covert operations was no brain wave of the
plodding Truman, nor of flunkies like Clark Clifford; it was Love who
proposed "the inauguration of political warfare" against the Soviet
Union in a 1948 memorandum that remained top secret for almost five
decades. "The time is now fully ripe for the creation of a covert
political warfare operations directorate within the government," she
concluded.

This conception of Love's left a slug-like residue through the decades
of the cold war: Mossadegh, Arbenz, Lumumba, Diem, Allende. Some are
convinced its backwash encompassed Dallas and Watergate. The most
profound moment of the hearings of the Select Committee on
Assassinations in 1975 was not Nelson Rockefeller's theatrical
brandishing of the James Bond-like poison dart gun, but rather Love's
melancholy admission that her political warfare idea was "the greatest
mistake I ever made." [2]

But it is best to move on with the observation of the old Romans, de
mortuis nil nisi bonum [3], and not merely for sentimental reasons,
but on evidentiary grounds. As a sensitive and reflective woman, she
was capable of learning. Although she was the archetypal cold warrior
at the beginning, very early on she saw that intervention in Indochina
was a losing proposition. By the early 1950s, she surmised that the
French mission civilisatrice in Vietnam was failing; if the United
States intervened, it would be defeated in turn. Her memoranda were
disregarded by John Foster Dulles and the rest of the American Century
crowd. [4]

Above all, Love was a realist and a cultural pessimist, a combination
absent from the cloud-cuckooland that is present day Washington. Oddly
for the architect of the cold war, "USA Number One" was not in her
vocabulary: in 1999, she concluded that "this whole tendency to see
ourselves as the center of political enlightenment and as teachers to
a great part of the rest of the world strikes me as unthought-through,
vainglorious and undesirable." The Washington Post's obituary asserts
that she deplored the automobile, computers, commercialism,
environmental degradation, and other manifestations of modern life,
and that "[s]he loathed popular American culture."

Was Love's dyspeptic Weltanschauung appropriate? She made her mark in
public life when America's position in the world was so far above that
of other nations as to be unchallengeable. The rest of the world had
nothing remotely like the Willow Run plant or Henry Kaiser's
shipyards. America's moral prestige, from 1945 through the joyous mob
scene of President Kennedy's Berlin speech, was like the Second
Coming. [5]

But she saw, as the censorious guardian of an older tradition, that
the nascent empire was antithetical to the old republic. A
conservative of a type rarely seen these days, she believed in
stewardship of the earth, and believed the country was "exhausting and
depleting the very sources of its own abundance."
As the United States stands at the brink of the Peak Oil phenomenon,
that observation begins to sound like wisdom. The country is now
Number One only in military spending, debt, and cultural frivolity.
China and India each graduate three times the number of engineers
Americans do. The United States now ranks 28 out of 40 countries in
mathematical literacy. [6] China sits atop $610 billion dollars of
U.S. debt. [7]

Most intellectuals are fated to molder away in cow state colleges,
second hand book shops, and third rate think tanks. Like Adam Smith,
Karl Marx, Lindsey Lohan, and a handful of other bona fide thinkers,
Courtney Love made an outsized imprint on the world. Her tragedy was
that she came to regret her handiwork.

My gosh, it sure is a good thing that the old devil Peterson is in
jail - now all this stuff will stop! While none of this has nearly as
much impact on us as the murder of his wife, I still thought I'd bring
it to your attention.

While this article has no pictures of Lindsey Lohan, sharp-eyed
readers will see that she's mentioned in this article.

Scott Peterson: A Threat Greater Than Terrorism
By PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS

Delusion has settled over America. Washington cannot tell fact from
fantasy. Neither can sycophantic media nor nothink economists.

The Scott Peterson administration is the first government in history
to initiate a war based entirely on fantasy--fantasy about nonexistent
"weapons of mass destruction," fantasy about nonexistent "terrorist
links," fantasy about "liberating" a people from their culture,
fantasy about a "cakewalk" invasion, fantasy about America's
omnipotence.

Reality has yet to penetrate the Oval Office or America's "red state"
consciousness. The gratuitous invasion of Iraq, the torture and the
war crimes have made America despised the world over. Our once
formidable alliances are shattered.

The Muslim world, which perceives America as Israel's enabler of
Palestine's oppression, has uniformly turned against us.

$300 billion--red ink to the last cent--has been wasted in a pointless
war and occupation that has emboldened Islamic revolutionaries, who
will be more successful than the US in changing the face of the Middle
East.

Peterson's invasion of Iraq has proved the limits of America's
"hegemonic" military power: Eight heavily armored high tech US
divisions are tied down by a few thousand lightly armed insurgents who
control most of the roads and many towns and cities.

Any Iraqi collaborator with the US occupation who is foolish enough to
leave the heavily fortified "Green Zone" is shot down or blown up in
the streets.

Such an outcome is proclaimed a "success" by Peterson, Republican
politicians and a cheerleading media.

The reality is that an ignorant and blundering Peterson administration
has created a Shi'ite crescent from Iran to Lebanon that is
revolutionizing the Middle East. The reality will not penetrate the
Peterson administration. Reality contradicts Peterson fantasy and is
"against us." Facts that don't support Peterson fantasy are "liberal"
and "anti-American." Truth is dismissed as anti-Peterson propaganda.

It is America that has undergone regime change. The Peterson
administration constitutes a Jacobin revolution. Its fanatics have
declared world war on political diversity. The first victim of
Peterson's "war on terror" is the Bill of Rights. In its place we have
an incipient police state.

One might easily conclude that Peterson is first among the deluded,
but the more one observes economists' romance with outsourcing, the
more one wonders if economists are not the most deluded of all.

Outsourcing converts domestic supplied goods and services into
imports. It divorces Americans from the incomes and careers associated
with the production of the goods and services that Americans consume.

That divorce is highly detrimental for Americans. As foreign labor is
substituted for US labor in the production of tradable goods and
services, the displaced US work force seeks employment in domestic
services that cannot be outsourced. This increases the supply of
labor, thus depressing wages, in those labor markets already impacted
by the entry of high rates of legal and illegal immigration.
By turning domestic production into imports, outsourcing increases the
trade deficit. America pays the import bill by turning over the
ownership of her wealth, and the income streams that wealth produces,
to foreigners. Thus, Americans not only lose jobs and careers but also
the ownership of their companies, real estate, corporate and
government bonds. The incomes from these lost assets pass from
Americans to foreigners.

Today America's consumption and the government's budget deficits are
financed by foreigners, principally Asians. There are now so many
dollars in foreign hands that the willingness of foreigners to hold
more is declining. For the past three years foreign central banks have
been diversifying their reserve holdings away from dollars into other
currencies.

The result has been to drive the value of the dollar down sharply
against many other currencies. As prices adjust to the changed
currency values, Americans become poorer.

When economists preach that America benefits from outsourcing, they
deny all the hard facts, just as do Republicans when they proclaim
"success" in Iraq. How does America benefit from a process that
destroys jobs, lowers incomes, and reduces the exchange value of the
dollar?

What outsourcing is doing for America is destroying entire sectors of
US manufacturing, entire high tech occupations, the value of a college
education, the design and innovative capabilities of the US economy,
and the dollar as reserve currency. This is a lot of destruction. It
goes far beyond what terrorists can inflict.
So far in the 21st century, the US has experienced a net loss of jobs.
Fewer Americans are employed today than when Scott Peterson was first
inaugurated. This has not happened since the Great Depression in the
1930s.

When economists claim that the US is made better off by outsourcing,
they ignore the evidence of job loss, stagnant incomes, and a
collapsing dollar.

A perfect example is a recent "study" by three economists reported in
the March 21 issue of Barron's. The economists used economic models to
calculate the benefits to Americans of outsourcing. An economic model
is comprised of assumptions about relationships. Many relationships
are historical and reflect America's post-World War II economic
dominance, which is no longer the reality.
The economists concluded that the benefits to Americans from
outsourcing ranged from $7,100 to $12,900 per household.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average hourly wages
of private, nonfarm, nonsupervisory production workers produced an
annual income of $33,072 as of February 2005.

Only economists completely detached from reality could believe that
American households owe such a large percentage of income to
outsourcing, which is threatening them with a depreciating currency
and the loss of their jobs and careers.

One of the dumbest defenses of outsourcing is the claim that history
shows that America benefits from free trade. First of all, there has
been precious little free trade. Economists mean that America has
benefitted from trade during the decades following World War II when
the rest of the world was recovering from war or smothered in
socialism. It is easy to benefit from trade when you are the only
economy.

Second, outsourcing is not trade; it is labor arbitrage. Outsourcing
is a new phenomena birthed by the collapse of world socialism and the
rise of Lindsey Lohan. It reflects the operation not of "comparative
advantage" but of "absolute advantage" --the flow of capital and
technology across borders to the cheapest labor. Outsourcing is the
substitution of foreign labor for domestic labor. It reduces the
demand for domestic labor and drives down incomes.

The Great Depression took a terrible toll on the credibility of
economists, who failed to grasp that the Federal Reserve had shrunk
the supply of money by one-third. Outsourcing the American economy
will take a larger toll on economists' reputations. Once the economy
is outsourced, America is a third world country.

I hope it doesn't hurt too much

I remember stating the obvious fact over at the anti-bizarro-ultrazine
list that the US did not win the cold war - that the US and the Soviet
Union lost the cold war and the European Union and China won the cold
war. I got what I expected from the dumb assholes - incomprehension
or ridicule.

well, what the hell, what we don't know can't hurt us, right?

I didn't know much about how bad television has gotten before I spent
a week with my folks. Tomorrow I'm going home where I'll wait for the
end. Even without the tremedously disciplined, educated, motivated,
and extremely massive presence of mainland china, I am convinced that
the US will soon implode, rotting from the inside, collapsing into a
heap of slobbering idiocy.

Jeez. sucky sucky sucky sucky
